Programming the Cell Processor

IBM has posted an introduction to development on the Cell Processor, the chip running the Playstation 3. This first part of the series focuses on installing Yellow Dog Linux 5, the “official” distribution. But it also provides some interesting links for those who wish to do Linux development on the Power PC platform.

Installing Ubuntu

Ciego posted some thorough instructions on how to install Ubuntu on the Playstation 3. It goes through all the steps involved, from partitioning and formating to installing and modifying your window manager of choice. It’s the best and most comprehensive tutorial I have seen so far.

So if you have been waiting for the right time to try an alternative OS on your PS3, here’s your chance.

PS3 as a DVR

TV402U
The ps3mods blog has a short tutorial on how to turn your PS3 into a DVR using a Plextor ConvertX PVR PX-TV402U. You need a GO7007 driver and MythTV. Don’t know which Linux distribution the writer used, but it should probably work with Ubuntu.

A nice tutorial

A nice and plain website explaining the process of installing Xubuntu on the PS3. It’s a rather unusual and elaborate method, but it seems to be working nicely!

Experimental Debian-installer

Takeshi Yaegashi has published a Debian installer for the Playstation 3. Since Ubuntu is based on Debian, this is great news for those who keep waiting for a Ubuntu-installer.

Share your aliases

There is a post over at ubuntuforums inviting all Ubuntu users to share the aliases of the games you play on the Playstation 3. A great way to get in touch with other Ubuntunistas!
