Why Ubuntu on the PS3?
The PS3 Compatibility page at the Ubuntu Wiki lists some good arguments for why porting Ubuntu to the PS3 would be a good idea.
This is an big opportunity for Linux in general and Ubuntu in particular to gain some userbase, and introduce Linux to a whole new group of users: Gamers. This is good to popularize Linux as a gaming platform.
It can also help make the PS3 more than just a games machine, making it suitable for Desktop applications as well.

I also think that the PS3 could be a great HTPC or mediacentre for people who don’t want to build a new PC but buy or want to buy a PS3 games console.
If it can be possible to get decent support for codecs like xvid/divx/matroska and HD versions of these codecs that work well (or work at all) it would be ideal for pushing Ubuntu to do this.
Imagine xine running well on a PS3. For me if Ubuntu could work flawlessly with the PS3 and do the above I would be buying one straight away. I would then have the advantage of having a great games console as well.

I agree, especially if Ubuntu would get optimized for the cell processor and the graphics chip and Sony would let it use PS3’s full potential and not locked any of the hardware.
