The ps3mods blog has a short tutorial on how to turn your PS3 into a DVR using a Plextor ConvertX PVR PX-TV402U. You need a GO7007 driver and MythTV. Don’t know which Linux distribution the writer used, but it should probably work with Ubuntu.

This could make the PS3 a great media center PC. Anyone know where I can get one?

It’s available at amazon, and probably other online stores as well. Let us know if you choose to get one and make it work in ubuntu.

well with gutsy if you could get mythtv to work, all you need is the hdhomerun, its a network device that can be used by any computer on the network. silicondust.com

I bought this. I spent over a month trying to get it to work. Anything you find online for instructions on getting this to work on a PS3 (or any Linux distro, for that matter) are spotty at best. What little that I was able to find online was mostly geared towards Gentoo Linux.
It was not even very straightforward getting it to work on my Linux PC. However, after some messing with it, and some info on http://nikosapi.org, I was able to get it to work on my Linux PC, but was still unable to get MythTV to work with it.
My advice- unless you’re a Linux genius, save your $$’s. If someone could figure this out I would be forever grateful. However, I’m thinking at this point it’s just a marketing scam.
