Firmware update 1.80 upscales DVDs, games

mediastream.jpgToday Sony are releasing a significant firmware update (1.80) for the Playstation 3. Here are some of the new features:

  • Upscaling DVDs and PS1 and PS2 games to 1080p resolution.
  • PSP Remote play via internet.
  • DLNA media center connectivity.
  • Photo printing with compatible Epson printers.
  • Zoom and trim images + a new type of slideshow.
  • Transfer save files from the PS3 using memory card adaptor.

Upscaling to HD resolution and DLNA are the biggest changes, and seems to work flawlessly. DLNA adds a button under the Picture, Music and Video menus of the XMB titled “Search for Media Servers”, which seems to work well in a Windows environment. If you have experience about DLNA using Linux, please let us know.

I’ll test out my Ubuntu Box and Gentoo box soon, but I didn’t have time so far today.
Well, I tried it out this morning in a Mac environment. I wasn’t able to get it to see iTunes, and I tried installing Twonky media server aswell as the allegro uPnP media server on a PowerMac - no go.
I have Verizon FIOS, which includes some kind of uPnP media services that the Motorola set-top DVR can see on a Windows box (lame) - but I’ll test that too…

Oh - Leonedo - I saw some information somewhere that said you need to run Windows Media Player 11 for the PS3 to hook up to - on either XP or Vista. Promising so far!

You can also try TVersity in Windows, which is free and able to convert video types on the fly into a format that PS3 supports.

I found a free open source implementation:

    There’s quite a few more at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Plug_and_Play#UPnP_AV_MediaServer_software

Does this mean you can play xVid perfectly (fullscreen without bad quality) on the PS3?

Seagate sells a “Shared Storage II” HD, enclosure and embedded PC that is 320GB ethernet NAS for as little as about $200. Its embedded PC runs Linux.

MediaTomb (http://mediatomb.cc/) works great for me… serves up all MP3s, JPEGs, and mpeg2/4 videos.

    No on-the-fly transcoding though.
