The Ubuntu team created a custom package installer specifically for PS3 that eliminates the “cant load kernel” error. Get it while it’s hot:

UPDATE: You need to use a different kboot than the one contained on the iso file to avoid a USB deregistering bug. See this post for instructions.

I just tried as well. Got the same oddball degregistering of USB buses. Last line before it locked up was ps3-chci-driver sb_05: USB bus 1 deregistered. Possibly different PS3 models having variations? Anything attached to the USB ports causing grief?

same problem here.. got a 40gb model today, and it freeze at the usb deregistration.. feisty fawn boots the live cd though..

Ok, likely not the models then since mine is a 60GB made in Feb. of this year. Might just have to put Feisty on it for now.

I had problems with my first burn. Try burning another disk and see if it works. I cant figure out how to alter the ps3 resolution to something that works with the os. Can anybody help?

Can’t wait for Sunday release of installation instructions. Can it be make earlier like Friday to maximize time during the weekend?

Yeah, I have the same de-registering happening on my install…. after I press enter to boot, my usb kb doesn’t work at all, and the system freezes after the third or fourth de-registering line.

There are some differences from the older 60 and 20 gig ps3’s and the newer 80 and 40 (and newer 20). They removed the hardware support for PS2 backwards compatibility, and update 1.80 gave new software (emulation) support for some (not all) PS2 games. So, there are hardware differences. This build may have been built on/for the older hardware set-up and needs another for the newer hardware set-up. I cant say for sure that there is any huge changes from model to mode. I have an 80 gigger so, Im not going to attempt a gusty install un-till I hear there is a special config for newer models.
By the way, 60 gig users can play all PS2 games, the rest of the 80 gig users have more of a hit and miss.
I hope this helps.
Can someone put out a post of all the benefits of useing Ubuntu on the ps3 and anything that Ubuntu offers that other distros dont? I think this could help draw more people to Ubuntu. I think a link from Ubuntu.com could also have a huge impact. I had to do a lot of searching to get here.

Mine is a 60 gig US model that freezes at the deregistering.
Oct 28th, 2007
60GB EU Model upgraded to 250GB with 1.93 firmware also freezing. The new kboot looks great and better in highres
looking forward to install and checking out 7.10 on it.
Oct 28th, 2007
Mine is the newest EU 40GB Model with the 65nm Cell CPU. It freezes too (”deregistering USB”). I used the “Custom 7.10 Gutsy for PS3″ directly from ubuntu.com…

You can avoid the deregistering USB issue by following the instructions in this post:
