Installation instructions updated

We have updated the instructions for installing Gutsy Gibbon on your PS3, using the alternate Xubuntu CD. There are some problems with the latest release (see previous blog post) hanging at the deregistering screen on some consoles, so until this is fixed use the october 18th releases instead.

The installation process has come a long way in terms of simplicity (just have a look at the Edgy Eft howto from earlier this year!). But there are still some quirks and problems you need to be aware of with the latest version. If you find alternative or better ways to do things please add a comment or forum post.

    Two things…
What does the newest release have that the 18th release doesnt?? I would rather wait a while until it is fixed if its definitely better

How slow does Ubuntu go? I noticed you guys used xubuntu instead

    I just found this
    http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/custom/20071025-gutsy-ps3/
It is a custom image that is supposed to fix some of the bugs of the latest release… what do you guys think?

I had no problems with installing the ubuntu version that was released on release day for ubuntu 7.10. Only problem I had was getting wired Internet working but that was fixed with a reinsallation and some editing of the /etc/network/interfaces file.

    Hi,
I made a clean install of the 20071025-gutsy-ps3 version and I had got the usb registered block issue. I change the kboot version and use the YLD one and the installation works.
I had also the network issue but by putting a SID information and set the DHCP activation the ethernet connection works.
    So it’s possible ;)
I had also a problem with the shut down process : it blocks …

Awesome tutorial. I just ran through it myself this morning. (Before work) And it went down exactly as outlined in the article. I am now the proud owner of a ‘Buntified PS3. Thanks for all your work.

To try and answer some questions…
Some people just prefer x to gnome but it is also a bit less performance hungry as well.
You can update your kboot by getting a kboot ether from your distro or from ps themselves and do the install as per the usual instruction.

Pappy : the next ticket explain how you can use an other kboot : just put an other kboot into a usk key and launch “install other os” … the kboot is found on the usb key and is installed. then put the ubuntu CD and reboot with kboot …

I still have the same problem as I cannont get my operating system back to normal by typing “boot-game-os” using the kboot, it says not found! Please help me as I cannot use my ps3 and I am really frustrated now.

Just, shutdown the PS3 from back of the consol and then bootup holding I/O button down at the same time.

    Or you can type:
    kboot: ps3-boot-game-os

I sucessfully installed Gutsy Xubuntu on my PS3. I have tried YDL, and standard Ubuntu for the PS3. Xubuntu is light enough that it seems to run fine on the more limited resources of the PS3. I am entering this from it right now. There is a small problem with the wired network setup that is corrected by editing /etc/network/interfaces. I am interested in helping with this project. I was thinking about trying to help get Puppy running on a PS3, but now feel that the Xubuntu distro will be light enough to function well on the PS3. I am familar with KDE and Gnome, but if they won’t run fast enough, then there is no sense whining about it. Please tell me how to begin participating. There does not seem to be alot of additional software available in the standard PS3 libraries. I hooked up a USB drive on the system to get access to more space. It works fine. How do you get the source so that I can begin compiling additional standard packages. This is not my only computer. I have access to lots of X86 systems, but am content to leave that work to others. Working with PS3 Xubuntu would be fun. All those extra processors that are not even being touched yet!!!

So i installed the buntu onto the ps3 but when it turns and i go into the operating system, the resolution is like 560×350, something like that and it wont let me change the resolution, no other available resolutions pop up when i try to change it. My TV is an HD LCD screen 37 in samsung, Was curious if anyone else had similar issues, or if anyone knows a way to possibly fix the issue.

Also, its been 3 months, is this fixed yet?

ok, so i get the deregister bug, and the PS# wont shut off unless i hold down the power button for a period of time.

when i type in “kboot: boot-game-os” i get this as a response

    “/init: eval: 1: boot-game-os: not found”

if anyone can help it would be great, thanks

jim, try multiple variations… boot-game-os is not always the default… try gameos bootgameos ps3-boot-game-os etc.

    Hi,

    Frustrating or what?

I found streammygame.com, software that will stream PC games to a PS3, IF it’s running Linux!
So, I got into installing ubuntu…..oh my god!
It’s a time warp. It’s like stepping back 20 years!
Don’t get me wrong, I admire the philosophy that drives the OS but the instructions are a shambles. There’s so much taken for granted in respect of user knowledge. Big gaps in instructions everywhere. Where is there a glossary of terms? please! I’ll never complain about Windows again.

I know,I know, lazy and spoilt rotten by the Windows interface but who wants to have to actually get involved in instruction code these days? I just want to play an FPS using keyboard/mouse on the PS3 I bought for it’s Bluray drive!!

Ok, if anyone is still listening, I’ve managed to install ubuntu 7.10 on the PS3 but since I exited ubuntu I now cannot get it loaded. In the XMB ‘Settings - Default OS etc. stops with ‘no default root fs was found or one was found but didn’t contain a message = config file.

    Keh? anyone?

    Mike.

    Same thing:

    ***
    Ubuntu PS3 KBoot Loader.

No default root fs was found, or one was found and it didn’t contains a message= config file.
    ***
    … and so on.

    Anyone?
