Workaround for the 1025-release

The otheros.bld file on the latest Gutsy release (10-25-2007) had an issue with USB deregistering that made the installer halt. To avoid it you need to use an alternate kboot. Here’s a quick howto:

Download this otheros.bld file and put it on a USB stick or burned media using the path

/PS3/OTHEROS/otheros.bld

Then, with the media inserted in the PS3, select [System] > [System Settings] > [Install Other OS]. The system will detect the otheros.bld file and use it to install a different kboot. Insert a CD with a burned iso of the latest Ubuntu port for the PS3, and set [Settings] > [System Settings] > [Default System] to [Other OS].

You should now be able to install the latest Ubuntu release by following our installation guide from step 3.

The older kboot permits to avoid the usb issue OK. But with the 10_25 version the linux cell library is found and no selection like you said is possible …perhaps this specific build is made to avoid this error.

I had also a big probleme after the installation : the network configuration : we have to indicate information for wifi connection to use the ethernet connection …

I wondered why they released an updated version of ubuntu for the ps3. I know the original one gave some error message when you booted it but it still let me install it without any problems or freezing up. As for setting up ethernet, it wasn’t too dificult. I got mine up and running by editing the /etc/network/interfaces file.

I’ve used the new workaround, and installed 7.10 with the ps3 ubuntu iso but when i get the usb deregistering error, and and after rebooting, i get an error about the network then my ps3 restarts and sits with a blank screen while my green power light flashes.

    Anyone have any ideas?

I copied the latest otheros.bld to main Ubuntu iso (replaced the old one). I selected and installed otheros in OS3 interface. Rebooted my machine and started the install. After the keyboard setup, it tries to detect my CDROM. For some reason this fails as it says that the Release file in corrupt or my CDROM is not correct.

When I run a manual CDROM detection, it only comes back with a Linux floppy.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

I keep getting stuck at 6% on the select and install software part. Is this a new issue or has it been address some where before?

I am getting an error that the data is corrupted when I try and install using the new boot loader. Anyone else running into this issue?

I manged to correct the problem by downloading the correct iso. The extended iso gave me a lot of errors. I also kept the otheros.bld seperate from the main boot CD.

My installation completed successful, but I now get an error that the boot entry is not found when I try tpo boot Ubuntu without the CD. It is as if it did not install the boot loader files or something.

ShaneC, which iso and otheros.bld worked with you?
Did you erase the otheros.bld from the iso disk?

    - no luck with wi-fi
    - resolution is stuck at very low, can not see the whole desktop, I try to change it between ps3videomode 0-3 and only 2 works for me.
any tutorial on wi-fi and resolution, will be highly appreciated

Sounds like 7.04 is still the way to go. Wifi works and you get easy access to extras to play all the video codecs. Any reason to upgrade besides having the shiniest ubuntu version?

well the detection of the other otheros.bld file stored on a flash drive didnt work for me. The default kboot started and I still have the same problem with the ps3 install failing because its still using the old kboot. How do I force a reinstall of kboot with this new version? Its not picked up automagically.

I tried downloading that otheros.bld file with my mac, used a usb stick and got the same corrupt message.
Then i downloaded it with a windows box and tried it again with the usb stick. No corrupt message.
    I’m still in the install process…fingers crossed…
    Hope this helps…

Hello! I think I know how to solve the problem. When you are in PS3 system plug only usb memory stick with otheros.bld, because system loads otheros.bld from cd, which is corrupted. Put CD with Ubuntu after you load otheros from usb memory stick and THEN and set [Settings] > [System Settings] > [Default System] to [Other OS].

I am new to linux, this is my first time trying it on anything. I have a 60gig ps3, and I could not find any way to install the new 7.10. But when I tried the 7.04 it worked perfectly. I was getting the USB deregistering that made the installer halt. I tried everything suggested on this site and nothing worked. Also I have a newer mac and the file i put on my usb kept giving a data corrupt message when I put it in my ps3. So the .bld file would only load off my cd. That may have been part of the problem. I will try putting that file in with the cd next time and write again if I have any luck.

if you get a blue screen with the alternate otheros.bld, use the otheros.bld off of the yellow dog linux dvd… then switch to the gutsy cd prior to hitting the default system command…

    Works great!

So you can’t instal the bld file if it was downloaded on a mac.

THIS is what I cannot STAND about linux. Too many posts of the SAME subject and for newbs like me that WANT to learn how to use Linux; so confused I don’t know which way to begin.

[quote]The otheros.bld file on the latest Gutsy release (10-25-2007) had an issue with USB deregistering that made the installer halt. To avoid it you need to use an alternate kboot.[/quote]

    Instructions found here: http://psubuntu.com/2007/10/29/workaround-for-the-1025-release/

    Then also instructions here:
    http://psubuntu.com/installation-instructions/

Why can this bootloader thingy just be incorporated into the new CD so a simple download with the latest fix is available. Sure I understand that a new post on the blog will allow new ppl to find out what has been updated; but why not patch the kernel or whatever the patch is to be included (from the first link above) to be included in the http://psubuntu.com/installation-instructions/ site & source for the DL ??

    * Help a brother out, guys. I really REALLY believe that Linux has come of age now for the average user to be able to use it as ubiquitously as WinXP. I want a Mac but I’m not spending the cash for one. Ubuntu looks like the BEST Linux OS around.

btw, thanks to the team for ALL their support and endeavors. Just make it easy for the little guy like me. I know my way around a BlackBerry, Windows, etc; but Linux is a new universe.

Something thats not often mentioned ( infact i’ve not seen it mentioned once ) is that you need to rename the otheros.bld.gz file that you download to otheros.bld before you put it on a usb stick. If you don’t do this because you think ‘oh the otheros.bld is wrapped up in a gzip, i should un wrap before putting it on the stick’ you will get told that the otheros.bld is corrupt bt the PS3 software when you try to install the otheros. Took me some time before i worked this out by comparing the size of the otheros.bld.gz downloaded and the otheros.bld on the cd.

To those using a Mac to download otheros.bld.gz and running into trouble, this is what you are doing wrong because you’ve never been told to rename the file.

The otheros.bld linked in this article fails to create the ps3da device, so i can’t boot off the HDD because it doesn’t exist to kboot. The kboot on the cd does make the ps3da device and tries to boot but gets caught by the usb bug.

    to ale:
I was having same kind of problem with resolution that you are having, I have a projector which is capable up to 720p and can scale 1080i picture down to 720. I managed to get a right signal by editing “/etc/kboot.conf” file.

I’ll tell you where to find instructions to edit it, but before you do anything, I must say that this is the FIRST time I’m using Linux and if something goes wrong I don’t have a clue how to fix it… ;)

okay, so I managed to get the right resolution by following the instructions in #3 message on this site:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=530184

he uses mode 4(1080i) on his settings, I used mode 3(720p) because 720p is my projectors native resolution.

    good luck! :)
