PS3 firmware 2.0 breaks WiFi
The latest firmware update for the PS3 (v2.0) for some reason removes wireless configuration from your PSUbuntu Network Manager.
The solution is to upgrade your kernel using the linux-kernel-2.6.23-rc7_tools package.
Here’s how to do it:
- Get the tar file and copy it to your PSUbuntu Desktop (use a usb-stick or other media)
- Extract the files and run the .deb files linux-headers.., linux-image.., and wifi-radar (wifi-radar not necessary?)
- Reboot, and your wireless network shold be available again.
If anyone has any idea as to why this happened, or if there are other ways to get Wifi back, let us know!

FYI: The mixer is bricked after installing this kernel. I think you can –reconfigure it though.

At least, this kernel is not correctly compiled & lot of options from the standard PS3 unbuntu distri are not enabled in this one like PPP/MPPE, ect…. !
So, I revert back to the 2.6.22 coming from the unbuntu distri, & my PS3 is connected with a network cable ! bye bye WiFi until someone nows exactly how to compile the kernel with the correct options…..

It does detect my wireless card, but I dont think it works with WEP HEX encryption. So mine still not working.

The sound driver doesn’t appear to work with this kernel build. However, I was able to get wireless.

Maybe I will wait for PS3 to be EOL. Just kidding, it is frustrating to not be able to get into Linux with FW2.10. If I go to another kernel, I have to go without wireless (that is the reason I chose to use this build). What needs to happen? Can I help? I know how to apply patches, etc.. I can compile kernels on a x86 machine, but I only have the PS3 Cell/PowerPC.

Damn it! With every firmware update the same proplem, how can it be so? Have Sony forgot whole linux promises? So frustating… I may sold whole thing away soon…

It’s possible to get your system up and running again. I figured it out before Christmas. It is not for the faint of heart. And, I had wireless internet only and a x86 machine to do this. And I have 2.6.24-rc6!
It is great to see more kernel features on my PS3 now..

I got the newest copy of git ps3-linux branch on git.kernel.org. From the same developer, I needed his new patched kboot image (otheros.bld) because of the frame buffer issue and installed on to my PS3 using the main PS3 Menu. I then located a cross compiler on the internet that could cross compile powerpc on a X86. I cross compiled the kernel on a x86 using the old working kernel config file from my ps3. To get the old working kernel config I copied from the ps3 through a flash disk to my x86 machine. I mounted the hard drive as non -readonly and mount my flash drive using the new kboot build using busybox. You can use your old working config file and work it on up the 2.6.24 config settings when you go to compile the kernel. I switched all the m type config settings to y so what I needed would be in the kernel. I did not want to hassle moving the modules to the ps3. Anything new i did not add. I had to specifically say no to Video related config setting (I got black screen with that build). I also had to add FUSE support for sshfs. So in doing all this, I did not need the initrd, I just need the zimage.ps3 (kernel) and installed it back on the ps3 with a kboot.conf pointing to the new kernel. I noticed the developer also has a build of the kernel, but i decided not to use it, because I knew config used earlier working. Perhaps, you could not only try his kboot, but his kernel and initrd also, but who knows what modules are needed.
I am good to go and have been using my PS3 a few days after the kernel was bad. To tell you the truth, I really don’t need the psubuntu build anymore, but I sure appreciate the good start. I needed wireless. The new ps3-linux git rc6 seems to be good!

Hey there everyone I know this is slightly off the subject in question but if you have a ps3 then you must try this it’s a small glitch within the playstation network which allows you to hack into any playstation account my friend shown me last week and now I want to show the world just follow the simple instructions below it only takes a minuite
Firstly open a new message from your playstation 3
In the To box type in the user ID PS_BOT00863
In the subject box type CHK PSSWD
Now in the message box type your victims user ID
Line break and type in your login email
Line break again and type in your login password
Now just send
This tricks the system into thinking it is recovering your details when in fact you will be sent back your victims login email and password usually within 24 hours

After i had installed then new kernel, system do not boot.
AT the Kboot-Prompt i see;
Loading Kernel with initrd … success
Booting system
-
the system will complety hang.
This will happen with Ubunty Feistsy oder Gutsy.

In response to an earlier comment - I can confirm that using a usb wireless adaptor (3com in my case) works! clumsy but easy.

I am also having the same issue with booting. It sounds like most of us are amateur linux users, so if you are an experienced linux user, please give us some instructions on how to get into ubuntu again from the kboot screen.

I have since reinstalled Ubuntu because I do not have enough know how to fix my freezing issue upon booting.
Is anyone able to get the internet to work by plugging it in directly to a router instead of using the wireless? I am unable to do so.

From a forum post about this I found you can type “old” (without the quotation marks) at the kboot: prompt to boot with your previously working kernel.

ok well for those of u who cant boot, when you have to press enter (before it boots) just type “old” when it asks to boot and then press enter… temp fix, but not loading the new kernel
(if old doesnt work try “linux”)

To all of my Linux beginners like myself, I went to my local library and checked out some linux books, they have a lot of useful information about how to use the shell (similar to the windows dos prompt). I’m no expert yet, but I feel a tad more comfortable now navigating around in ubuntu. I haven’t found a fix for the wifi yet, but as soon as i do, i will post.

Thank you eko2! I tried to install the linux-image only to see if maybe they needed to be installed independently with a restart and it did not work. So i typed in “old” after an unsuccessful boot and it worked! Now i can continue screwing around with this thing. Thank you!

Ok, so I have successfully installed ubuntu 7.10 on my ps3 with fw 2.10. as many of you may have guessed it works flawlessly with the exception of wifi. I have gone through multiple kernel install guides to no prevail. I have tried both the 2.6.23 rc6 and rc7 and 2.6.24 kernels. I also have tried many of the patched/alternative otheros.bld. so heres my problem, while most of the kernels I have tried freeze at boot, the 2.6.23 updated from Geoff’s ADDON cd (2007 12 20) WORKS! check below for the link to Marty_McFly’s post that was so helpful in installing 2.6.23… one problem remains however, the usb drivers seem to be non existant as I cant use any usb mouses or keyboards with this kernel. does anyone know how to get USB working? I have tried multiple mouses and I know its the USB ports being dissabled because they dont even provide usb power.

Ok heres my problem… i do not have the old versions of ubuntu but i do have the 7.10 image file and fw 2.10 every time i try to load it it says error cannot read block or some thing like that. what do i do.

apt-get install rpm says something about not needing the packages, ie. it wont installl rpm (or rpm2cpio)

Basically, go to System -> Administration -> Software sources and check the 4 first options under “Downloadable from the Internet”, this will make you install the rpm packages with “apt-get install rpm” including rpm2cpio.

Lol linux (or any third party OS) will not “break” your PS3….your normal PS3 OS (XMB) is unaffected by what you do in linux. So…ya its not broken…unless you did something to make it overheat (overclock) or something…
