No PSUbuntu Hardy yet

After yesterdays official release of Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron, many of you have tried upgrading to the newest version using the Update Manager. But based on our own efforts, and those of you who reported errors on the forum, it does not yet work. Neither does any of the recent 8.04 CD image releases, if you plan to do a clean install.

There are still quite a few serious bugs in the kernel, X and the installer that prevent Hardy from working on the PS3. The developers are working hard on eliminating the bugs, but it could still be months before we have a working solution. If you’re interested in helping out testing and debugging, consider joining the ubuntu-cell mailing list.

You can follow the bug reports here.

UPDATE: Michael S. found a way to upgrade, but it takes some serious time and effort. See comment #2 for an elaborate walkthrough.

It is possible and I found a work around! I used wireless and it was fast because of a CD install.

The custom built kernel I built (2.6.24) boot up regardless of the 8.0.4 LTS upgrade. I did not want to mess with the kernel of distribution, because I built my own patches for removing the huge black borders regardless of video mode.

I downloaded the daily distribution of hardy powerpc-ps3 and burnt to cd. I used wget to make sure I get the iso image. It would of been nice if there was a torrent (they are faster to get the image when the ubuntu servers are busy with a new release).

The 8.0.4 LTS upgrade did run off the CD when I inserted while in my desktop. I made sure I chose the option to run the install off the CD instead of the network. However, the CD would continually eject as it proceeded with install. I then mounted it via root, after it ejected a few times. It complained through the install, but continued. It finally died with the desktop black screening.

I hit Ctrl-Alt-F1, typed screen, apt-get update (didn’t do much, because it appeared to continually pull off the cd), then did apt upgrade, then apt dist-upgrade.

The process went on a long time, I slept, answered questions, and slept some more.. answered questions and slept more (all night) and then rebooted, and everything started up, and everything is running.

I then knew that the sources.list list of apt sources was commented out and pointed to the cd, so I made a back up of the cd version and then copied the sources.list~ to sources.list. It looks like the installer made that backup. I made sure it was pointing to hardy. I then did a apt-get update. I then apt-get upgrade, no applications needed to be installed, because the cd image was new enough. I hope to see upgrades as the days go by.

I use the PS3 with xcfe mostly, sometimes with gnome, and remotely I use ssh calling out to xcfe and calling pulseaudio locally to my faster home machine.

    The end.

wow that sounded like a PITA problem, but congrats on getting it to install. I hope they make an easier way, seems like we ps3/ppc users always get neglected :(

The current distros of Ubuntu for PS3 are lacking support for too many things…

Please please develop a easy to install version of Ubuntu/Xbuntu HARDY HERON for Playstation 3…

with all components working out of the box (Sixaxis, wifi,a launcher to reboot into PS3’s Operating Sytem, media player using SPE,spumedialib,Bluetooth Keyboards and mouses).

    Thank you very much.

If someone finds it in their heart to do this, it would be the definative PS3 linux version to get.

    There’s 20 million+ PS3 owners.

Making the definitive best version of linux for the PS3 would benefit tons of people.

————What does the linux community have to gain by doing this?—————

I estimate that there are more PlayStation 3 machines in people’s home’s than PPC and intel macs combined. By taking full advantage of this, Ubuntu could theoretically grow to a larger market share than mac OSX, which would put it on the proverbial radar in a very serious way.

As of now the Ubuntu PS3 port is struggling. I recommend that Canonical reassess the value of this port and really throw their might behind it. Not only that, but I think Ubuntu should use the opportunity to implement a few features that could make it the best gaming OS on earth, such as qjoypad integration and a gaming-mode wherein all processes not related to the task at hand are hibernated to swap while a game or, say, fullscreen blender, runs.

Windows is why people are running from the PC for their gaming. Let them run to linux. Let them not be disappointed. …Let them wonder why they even bother with windows.

In addition, Sony has done something great by letting us use the PS3 to run linux’s own code. Let them be envied for it.

Yes, the GPU, made by Nvidia, is currently locked down so that Ubuntu cannot use its unmatched amazing power. Once the brilliant hackers on linux’s side unlock it, think of the possibilities Ubuntu will have. Just think… 2 teraflops of processing power at Ubuntu’s disposal.

What can linux’s devs lose by developing Ubuntu for the PS3? Maybe countless people around the world using Ubuntu on the most powerful computer out there? If Ubuntu isn’t there for the PS3, everyone will turn to YellowDog (bleck!), as so many already have. There are very few people who retain hope for PS3 version of Ubuntu and are forced to use YellowDog.

I’m not just saying this is an opportunity. I’m saying this is a good opportunity, and a relatively exclusive opportunity. To miss it would be terrible. Not that we will. Those of us with PS3’s are making do with what we have… but the lack of real support really will have slowed us down in taking advantage of the situation.

Furthermore, canonical is our best hope of negotiating the unlocking of the RSX. If that happens, Ubuntu will be in direct competition with the PS3’s gaming OS. If canonical cares to compete, and we make something better, well, what would that say about gaming on linux? People have PS3’s. Did anyone think they just might want to try tremulous, apricot, warsow, urbanterror, nexuiz, openarena, and so on and so forth on them? How else is that going to happen?

PS3 owners are humans too. And they’re a lot more likely to try linux on their PS3 than their PC, I would think.

EVERY SINGLE guy I know who owns a PS3 told me that he wants to use his PS3 as a surfing/office/entertainment machine and has heard that there are ways to put another OS on it and that they want to get rid of a PC in their living room because it’s too loud and too big and they need it for news and surfing and stuff like that, but would like to just have only a PS3 they already own with possibilities of a simple living-room-pc. I think that a simple installation of Ubuntu on a PS3 would give a GREAT market share for Ubuntu and even PS3-Users would LOVE it

In short, if one of you could take what Micheal Steele did, and make it into a simple install process, and package it with a version of hardy heron with (Sixaxis, wifi,a launcher to reboot into PS3’s Operating Sytem, media player using SPE,spumedialib,Bluetooth Keyboards and mouses) all working out of the box.

I and all the other linux newbs that own PS3s would be soooo incredibly greatful to you the great service you provided us with.

Micheal Steele, thank you for that incredible work you did on getting it to work.

And the getting rid of black border thing sounds incredible too.

Do you think there is any chance you could put out a version of hardy heron with all your tweaks, and with support for out of box Sixaxis, wifi,a launcher to reboot into PS3’s Operating Sytem, media player using SPE,spumedialib,Bluetooth Keyboards and mouses..

and upload it to a torrent or something.

I would be incredibly appreicative and I would send you a donation via paypal for your work, as I am sure would other ps3 owners. Thank you soooo much.

I think this site’s overall goal should be arrive at a all in one package of Xbuntu/Ubuntu Hardy Heron for the PS3 that just works perfectly immediatley after a straightforward install process with no other tweaks, changes or work needed.

As soon as you install it, all the components are working out of the box, Sixaxis, WiFi, Media Player using SPE, Spumedialib, any Bluetooth Keyboards and Mouses the person may be using.

On top of this, the ultimately version already has any speed increases and tweaks that anyone found, an icon on the desktop that reboots the operating system back into Playstation’s OS, Micheal Steele’s hack to get rid of black borders completely on all hdtv resolutions, and perhaps an easy way to customize the look to make it look better/cleaner.

Once such an all in one build is out there, on the torrents or on this site, it would be such a massive help to the 20+ million PS3 owners out there that are linux newbs.

They could just install it and not have to worry about anything else.

If someone finds it in their heart to do this, it would be the definative PS3 linux version to get and would help out so many people.

    There’s 20 million+ PS3 owners.

But before we can put together such a version, first we need to compile a list of all the different hacks and tweaks that people have out their for linux on the PS3. That’s the purpose of this thread, to have people list off all the hacks and tweaks they know of or developed on their own.

P.S. Thank you for putting this truly fantasic site together for all of us PS3 Owners. We all owe a great deal of thanks. :)
For anyone interested in working with me on this, I’ve found documentation on creating a custom Live CD at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDCustomization. I’m not yet sure that the customization itself would have to be performed on a PS3 since the “testing” step involves QEMU, so possibly things like adding wireless sixaxis support, emulators, etc. could be accomplished by simply taking the ISO and running it through QEMU and then changing configuration files and adding programs through the emulator. I’ll try that tonight. Anyway, if anyone wants to help… :)
The problem I believe is that powerpc is an unofficial port of ubuntu. It is maintained by the community and there are not many people developing ubuntu port for ps3. I think this is the bigest problem of all. If more people were interested and have the time and patience to help with development maybe it would have been working ontime for release date. As it stands now, people can try and get more invovled in fixing the current problems and find more people who may be interested in getting this working properly. With the addition of hte ubuntu cell mailing list, I believe that the project is moving hte the right direction and am looking forward to seeing ubuntu 8.04 up and running on the ps3 een though I am currently using a weekly build of a testing distro for ps3. The more distros that work on the ps3 the better off I think linux and people who are interesting in running a computer on their ps3 will be since they will have a wide range of choice as to what distro to install.

I just was in the package manager last night and upgraded to 8.04 over the net no problems — took a couple hours to download and whatnot, but booted up when I typed “old”. I had 7.10 I guess and was fighting with getting the wireless working and already messed in my kboot.conf so I couldn’t tell ya right now which kernel that boots without going home and looking. :)
Still fighting with finding the best kernel. I’d love one that worked with wireless (and no borders too, what!). I got one booted that is suppose to work, but now Network Manager has everything grayed out. Oh well. It’s nothing too usable right now anyway since I’m stuck at 480p, but I’ll mess with it some more as time passes I’m sure.

I’m writing this on Xubuntu Hardy. I’ve made tutorial at forum how I did it. I bit astound still as I though I read just few days back about Hardy issues at launchpad, but I’ve managed to upgrade very easily to Hardy and it runs actually quite well. dmesg | tail prints out

“ioctl32(xfce4-terminal:2765): Unknown cmd fd(18) cmd(0000530b){t:’S';sz:0} arg(0fe817cc) on /dev/pts/0″ type errors for some unknown reason, but it doesn’t appear to affect using Xubuntu.
