PSUbuntu Forums user miguel writes that he has made Kubuntu Intrepid (the upcoming release scheduled for october) run on his PS3. It’s said to be performing quite well (”faster than normal ubuntu”) with KDE4.1.
The process:
Use the alternate kubuntu-8.04.1 release for powerpc.
You need to manually install the latest test kernel for PSUbuntu developers.
Miguel is using petitboot.

Why not Xubuntu? XFCE will only need 128MB RAM instead of KDE which will need 384MB RAM as there is only 256MB RAM of XDR2 in PS3.

The 384MB RAM apply as a minimum maybe to the kubuntu releases with Kde 3.5.X.. Kde 4 and Kde 4.1 represent a major improvement not only on usability, eyecandy, etc but also as it consumes much less memory than the previous releases. Check this article as an example or install it and see for yourself: http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/12/13/2314206

Check my Kde 4.1 install on Intrepid ram usage at:
http://rs313tl3.rapidshare.com/files/139002248/3711824/IntrepidKde41Ps3.jpg
There’s 4.68% being used by x11vnc which I used to remotely take the screenshot, so in theory I have 50% of ram free for use..
Cheers!

Miguel,
I don’t know allot about linux, do you think it is possible to make a installation guide so that I can install the new ubuntu on my ps3 I’m currently using 7.10 because ubuntu 8.04 doesn’t install on my ps3.

Ahhh…It’s really good! Thanks!I have changed my net-name into PS3Kubuntu as my used net-name was PS3Xubuntu!Right now Kubuntu 8.04.1 is the only release edition of ubuntu for PS3 and with Long Term Support. It’s a really sad thing for us but gives us a really luck. The ’sad’ is there is no any other choice such as Gnome or Xfce;the luck is that Kubuntu is the only release edition of ubuntu for PS3 and the only we can support and don’t need any other choosing!

The .iso link posted in the summary above is wrong (first link in the tutorial)! The link is Hardy (8.04.1), but you need to download an Intrepid (8.10) .iso. Read page two of Miguel’s original post for the correct .iso:

I am sorry to repeat the previous question, but why not use Xubuntu, due to it’s low RAM usage? I have Xubuntu 7.10 ppc running on my PS3 and I’m also running usually around 50% RAM usage, similar to your screenshot. Have you tried Xubuntu? I can’t find any good info comparing Linux versions on PS3 so any info would be helpful.

Nikolaus, you are totally right, although I have been using Xubuntu 7.10 for several weeks now. This Intrepid stuff (8.10) needs to stay in the oven a little longer for the average user, IMO.
