The official beta release of Ubuntu Intrepid is coming up, but you will have to wait a little while longer for the PS3 version.
PSUbuntu (Cell) development is going well, but a kernel package naming issue prevented it from being released along with the other Ubuntu flavours. Hopefully it will be ready for the next daily build.
We’ll keep you posted on updates as the 8.10 release date approaches.

The daily build from today has the 2.6.25 kernel integrated so It’s a step forward but fails on “Choose and install applications”.

You´re never gonna believe what happened to me, 10min ago I upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04. It took more than 2hours and right now it´s 04:33 in de morning. I should be in bed by now. But I was willing to make the sacrifice. Everything goes well until Ubuntu ask for a reboot. I was happy that everything went well so with full excitement I rebooted my Playstation 3. Motherfucker wont start further. There seems to be a problem with the kernel. Why, oh why did this happen to me.
Can someone please help me out here, should I do a clean install with the older ubuntu or is there a way to install a older kernel so that 8.04 ubuntu can boot up. I find this more than a fuckup situation spending all the night waiting for nothing.
I someone can help me out here.

Try to update the otheros.bld
Oct 9th, 2008
I want to thank the person who gave me the tip about using a newer version otheros.bld. Really thanks, it worked. There´s only one problem it´s slow very, very slow. The thing is I don´t know allot about linux. I´m just trying and learning. During the OS boot up Ubuntu made notice about a program crashing. When I update to 8.04 I all ready had 7.10 installed, maybe that´s interesting to know or maybe not. But at the I successfully installed Ubuntu 8.04, the only problem it´s really slow. Maybe if intrepid takes to long to release I will go back to 7.10. I hope that you guys can help me out. Or give me some tips.

Not at all Prodejeff
How have you upgraded from gutsy to hardy?
and how much RAM is available now?
P.S. sorry, i’ve forgot to insert my nick in my previous comment.

When I decided to upgrade my internal hard drive from 40gig to 250gig. I re-installed Ubuntu 7.10 live cd and for months I was able to upgrade to hardy without any luck. But somehow today early in the morning (let’s say 02:10) I felt the urges to try it another time and yes it downloaded a over the 1000 of packages and after that the installation begone.
Here are the statistics:
Main Memory Ram: total 86,2 mega byte
(Right now it uses 61,7 mega byte, that is 71,6% of the total available memory)
Swap Memory: total 478 mega byte
(right now it uses 119,4 mega byte, that is 25% of the totale available swap memory)
About the 2 CPU’s:
CPU 1: 8,0%
CPU 2: 8,0%
These are the overall score of percentages after bootup, I’ve done nothing with it now playing music, now watching video’s or browsing the web. This is a idle state consumption of the os.
My conclusion: ”memory problem”, I’ve Sony only put more Memory in the machine than most of the problems are fixed. You know what would be risky if we could replace the current memory with a bigger xdr module.
I really hope that for the next-gen console Sony is gonna put 2 gig of memory.
But that’s wishful thinking.
I hope this info is useful.
Gtz Jeff and if you have tips to make hardy faster please let me know.

To everyone how’s interested I’ve made 2 screen shots of hardy ps3. I’ve you want I can mail them to you then you can examen the shots for your own studies or analysis
This is my e-mail adres:

Really sad that the ps3 only has 256mb of main memory, if someone only could make a bypass so that linux can use the graphic memory.

Ones I did a test, there is a way to use more swap memory by using a memory stick. I did this test and I remember that I had over 1 gig of swap that was mainly because the memory stick was 1 gig big.
I detected an improvement in performance. I did this test a couple of months ago. But after the test my memory stick was a complete mess. I used G-parted to make the stick usable.
I hope I gave allot of info so that other people can make hardy to work on there ps3. If you have tips for me please let me know.

Yes, the problem is RAM. But 86,2MB is not the real amount of PS3’s RAM. PS3 has 223.2MB. You have only 86,2MB due to something wrong when upgrade to hardy.
I think you must to reinstall Gutsy Gibbon again, then if you want to upgrade to Hardy you must update source.list with hardy’s repos, then in a shell do:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Hi the problem with hardy on the PS3 is that the kernel that is being used on hardy for hte ps3 does not give hte proper amount of ram so it makes it rally slow. If one wishees to use hardy on their ps3, they must compile and intall their own kernel. Wish I could find a tutoral on what values to set in the kernel to get it working properly as I know how ot build it.
Oct 10th, 2008
Yes right Norberto, I’ve installed Kernel 2.6.25.4 so my Hardy work pretty well.
Oct 10th, 2008
Hello everyone,
I have one question, can I with little knowledge install that kernel (2.6.25.4), can I find that kernel in the package list or do need to create it myself.

Hi yes you need to build the kernel yourself from source or install the latest kernel from the PS3 Linux Distribution Kit. I don’t really know how to install the distribution kit and I don’t know the values for building the kernel from source although I know how ot do the actual build.

Hey Prodejeff,
Thanks for sharing your experiences.
After this experience with 8.04 are you happy you made the switch?? Or is your preference still to use Gutsy?
I have Gutsy working so nicely for me I’m reluctant to start playing with Hardy or Intrepid yet. I foresee many sleepless nights and hair being torn out!
Can this updated Otheros build boot into 2.6.25 AND 2.6.24 kernals?
Oct 16th, 2008
Hello everyone,
I want to thank everyone who gave me tips/tricks, I’m still a newbie when it comes to linux, I’m not even a I.T. specialist. So I don’t know how to build a new kernel maybe I will give it a try.
But my strong advice if you’re running ubuntu gutsy 7.10 for ppc hardware, stay with that until there is an official release of a newer version.
But if you know how to build a kernel and you have allot of experience with linux and ppc hardware. You should try to do an upgrade.
But I’m gonna give one more try.
If I’m successfully I will write my report on this site.
Best of luck for everyone

Is it safe to test?
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/ports/daily-live/current/
Oct 19th, 2008
Depends on what you mean is safe. I’m pretty sure it won’t destroy your ps3. Hihi.
I tried the iso from 20081018 and the kernel is back in after having been removed earlier. There is also an option to configure the wireless during install but it only supports WEP according to the message on screen.
The install still errors out when configuring packages but it works after bootup but only in text mode. It’s an alternate install after all so that’s no surprise. All installations from daily discs I’ve tried become unbootable when installing the ubuntu-desktop. I believe it is the initrd generation that’s conflicting.
So if you only use textmode I think it will be ok. I will install fluxbox and see what happens.

I can confirm a nice clean install from the daily build of 2008-10-27. I hope it works well for you to install.

Thanks Tim, do you have a 720p-screen or 1080. If the first one, do you have problems with black borders around the screen image (visible desktop)?
