On April 1 (no joke) the 3.21 firmware will be rolled out, effectively wiping out anything you have put on your OtherOS-partition. The move is due to security concerns from Sony, apparently because of the hypervisor hack.
psubuntu.com will not shut down any time soon. There is still lots of useful information in the forums, and some of you might want to skip the update just to keep their OtherOS running. But we realize this is now a niche user base.
Although it took some effort setting up and optimizing Ubuntu on the PS3, this community has provided lots of useful information and tools to make it worth the effort.
Thanks to all those who have been involved.

I won’t update or buy any new games! Screw Sony!!! This was my first & FINAL playstation console! As I bought the console, Linux was the main reason for me to buy a FAT model&not a slim one! It must be much cheaper shutting done the hypervisor rather than patching it-very nice move … if you’re into savin money on other people’s

  2. Cyfer

… very bad move on sony’s part! If it really was a security risk to the hypervisor, they should work toward securing the hypervisor; not blocking the entier “other OS”.
I hope sony knows that they’ve just opened a can of worms. From this day forward, there’ll be an explosion of homebrew games for ps3 linux, alternate psStore, alternate firmware.
Sorry Sony – you did this to yourself. We paid good money for the ps3, and you’ve just raped us and tossed us aside.

  3. darkcat

I just got Ubuntu 9.10 running on my Ps3 a few weeks ago and I’m pretty mad at sony because I’d just begun to mess with it. Now I can’t play all the DLC games I bought or buy anything new. Nice job sony keep up the bad work!

  4. Andrea

Sony is doing the worst mistake ever done!!

I hope that something/someone will stop sony to doing that

I want linux on my ps3, I hate sony for this… I never will buy something of sony in my life…

  5. Anton

CellBE is such awesome thing … And yet sony is killing it’s open sources … Huge mistake.

  6. manfi

    just my opinion.
im using ubuntu before the launch of the ps3.
i was into using linux on my ps3 and sell my “useless” computer, not know about psubuntu, but yellow dog (cause it was the “supported” linux)
too bad, i made the mistake of just start playing games lol.
i did not partition my hard disk before start downloading demos, saving profiles, creating users, home, game data, game savings, music, etc
so after a good game time, i was into installing linux and mess with it; i wait until yellow latest version too, but in the few weeks i wait i build a lot of data in my hard disk.
i did not want to lose all my data while creating other os partition (i dont had a USB big enough too backup all my data) so i think i will do it later.
when i finally decided to backup and try linux, they decided the slim will drop linux support, i was planning buy one to replace the fat i got, so i see no linux future for me.

now no future for anyone i guess.

I GUESS I WILL SEARCH THAT ISO I BURNED A YEAR AGO, AND TRY IT BEFORE THE WEEKEND.

i read so much angry and frustation, i understand it…but

    1. you got the option to install linux in the first place, what other console allow you to do this, and if you got the ps3 just for linux, just dont update and continue as normal.
    2. everything had an end in this life, nothing last forever, dont tell me you think you will using your ps3 with psubuntu in 2020, you got 4 years of a free ride than nobody else give you.
    3. i read a lot when i was planing installing linux and performance was bad, used a port for powerpc not for the cell, not extra cores used, not gpu support, video had no gpu help, 3d nonexistent, it had less than 200mb of ram, problems with wifi, bluetooth, minors changes in each hardware revision that can cause problem, even firmwares updates can cause problems, so… it was most like an expirement, a sandbox, not a real option, much like a beta.
    3. as much as i liked sony to support linux, since i had a very happy 5 years without windows, i dont bought my ps3 just for linux, i doubt anyone do that, its a gaming machine, built for games that also do other thing.

but, hey who am i to tell you what to do… if you are happier being angry and frustated for things out of you control, then be happy in your own way.

  7. Art

    This is so gay.

  8. McDuck

I became a full time Linux user thanks to my PS3.

I’ve installed Yellow Dog Linux, Gentoo, and PSUbuntu on my PS3.

I ditched XP on my home computer in favor of Linux Mint.

I refuse to upgrade the firmware on my old PS3.

I refuse to give Sony more of my hard earned money for the “privilege” of keeping an as advertised feature and gaming online via PSN.

Sony can go to hell. Open source for life! :)

  11. BBB

Sucks, but I’ll be waiting for the next Playstation in hopes they will get it right and enable Linux support again. Why? Well… what else am I going to do? I bought the system to play games and would love to do more, but obviously Sony is made up of wieners when it comes to potential piracy empowerment now. What other Linux on console options do we have?

It’s injustice, but not as much injustice as Nintendo focusing on not making a single challenging respectable game since the GameCube era. Not as much injustice to me as Microsoft on making defective hardware, hidden costs for wireless adapters and online play. Moreover still completely missing the point with it’s shallow library of games focused on guns and muscle themed behind darkness. Also, even though it has nothing to do with either issue directly, it really bothers the hell out of me that they market the hell out of forcing their users to use their Mii rip-offs.

Even if I have only used Linux in the past couple of years over any other computing OS I am a gamer first and a Linux supporter second.

  12. BBB

Actually, ignore my discourse. If anyone can do anything about this travesty it’s the EFF. I’m going to go check it out and anyone else who believes in the rights for people to keep this feature that was promised with the console should too.

  13. mike

ive heard that the other os option will only be removed in firmware 3.21, but supposedly every update after 3.21 wont affect it. anybody know if this is true or not?

  14. wilee

Mike, geoffrey.levand at am.sony.com the main kernel developer has been reassigned
so that is the death nail for linux support. As Sony has pulled the plug on funding linux development, geoffrey.levand will continue to do this on his own time , with the blessing from sony.

  15. Icelandterrorist

I just installed xubuntu on my console a few days ago, this makes me sad.

I will not update for as long is i can and will continue to use the other OS for as long as I please. hell I’m even using it right now!

  16. vader

This is a bad move made by sony, but i still have a high respect for them. my only debate is to leave my fatty alone & buy a slim. or just update my fatty and move on…

  17. Luke Yelavich

For all of those people who still intend to use PS3 Linux in some way, I encourage you to join the ubuntu-cell list https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-cell so we can work together to integrate all worthwhile fixes into the PS3 port.

Up until now, I haven’t been that much interested in the port, even though I have a PS3 that can run Linux. Now that Sony are taking other os away however, I want to try and make the port of ubuntu as strong as it can be, and give it a couple of years of good usefulness by those of us who keep Linux running on our PS3.

Its too late for lucid, but we can certainly do more for lucid+1.

  18. greg

it is april 1st isn’t it???

  19. Me

Ahh.. this reminds me of the good old days when it was OK to hate Sony (2004 or 2005, rootkits on CD-lookalikes). Any big company is bound to pull this kind of stunts every once in a while. So move on, nothing to see here. Get a better console/computer.

    No wait. I’ve actually NEVER played a single PS3 game on my PS3 :D . I guess I won’t upgrade…

  20. Dave

WHY!!! Sony officials said they would never take away the linux option! I spent a lot of money for an original PS3 so I could play all my ps games and Linux!! F$@# sony!! I’m Done!!

  21. I have created a Facebook group for requesting the compatibility with Linux systems back to PS3. If we gather a significant number of users, maybe Sony would do something!

  22. parttimepenguin

This is sad news for me also. Just a few weeks ago, I purchased new fat PS3 (Uncharted Bundle) for $429, even though there were the less expensive slims with bigger hard drives, so I could run Linux. Luckily I bought it and updated the firmware with version 3.15 before this happened, and installed Ubuntu 9.10. I’m not planning on updating the firmware. Sony if you’re reading this, you made a big mistake and alienated a lot of people by REMOVING a touted feature.

  23. Gareth Rees

Thought I’d create a real Poll to see what people actually think… please fell free to use and re-post.

    http://host1.easypolls.net/poll.html?p=8981

    Interesting results….

  24. vitorgatti

    I’m boycotting Sony.
And waiting for GeoHot to release a CFW 3.21 that mantains OtherOS support.

    Damn you, Sony.

You’ve just lost a lot of geeks costumers.

  25. Koning Leo

I really enjoy Xubuntu on my PS3 and I will for as long as I can. Hosting a ps3-updatelist.txt file for 3.15 isn’t that hard, Sony :-)

The real problem comes when te firmware changes too much so errors start occuring.

  26. Aric

Personally this pisses me off very much. My solution I just bought a 20gb original and put a bigger hdd in it. I’m going to use tbis as my gaming machine and use the other one for linux only. Sucks but nothing really else to do about it for now.

  27. sony’s ad campaign should now be- ” playstation- it only does whatever we @ sony feel like it should do “

  28. Brandon

I’m not going to update !! I’m sticking with ubuntu on the PS3. It’s great that this site will not be shutting down! If sony wants to play and not be giving me access to all the new “STUFF” example NEW GAMES NEW BLU-RAY MOVIES, PSN GAMES, NO PSN STORE ACCESS, ETC ETC then they are not getting my money.

Sure sure your not entitling me to update “your” firmware as stated in the EULA. Great way to avoid a class action lawsuit right?? huh???

Sony your jinxing your self and wait until some person comes up with a hacked firmware! it would probably be a custom firmware 3.15 so sony you are burned once again!!!

Why remove a feature that’s already hacked?? Whats the point of it? If it’s hacked then their is no time machine to remove the option to install linux in EAIRLER firmwares so whats the point ITS REALLY HACKED.

  29. http://3004.pokemonger.com/showthread.php?tid=21

Keep other OS and still use PSN, a guide (for windows and linux)

  30. Hackers

Classic sign of a company telling us what’s best rather than letting us decide, quick to take your money for a very expensive console but not really there when we disagree with something.

  31. leo

hey si quieren seguir conectados a la psn sin actualizar

  32. The Thunder Chimp

    Hello friends,

I have posted a HOWTO on ubuntuforums, org to keep online access AND Other OS. It’s very simple. Please check it out:

    The Thunder Chimp

  33. Anonymous

that’s great. the next step will be to remove backwards compatibility with PS2, and my PS3 will suck like the slim ones. fuck Sony. I love Dreamcast.

  34. dom

I just bought a hdd the other day to install linux on my ps3 but today when i’m looking for the install instructions i run into this bs

  35. Anonymous

The update is ridiculous, you would think that Sony would have the decency to try to make it worth your while to update. For example, giving us some new and awesome functionality that would outweigh not being able to install the other OS.
Instead they remove functionality weather you update or not.
Well sony, given the choice between installing linux on my ps3, or being able to log in to your crappy store. I think my choice is clear.
    fuck the 3.21 patch

what a bunch of moronic asswipes

  36. EskoCruz

Don’t give up support, cause we haven’t given up Linux on PS3 cause of bad business decisions.

  37. Nooooo. I’ve only just got my HD tv and was keen to get psubuntu up and running. Then I see that my PS3 is requesting an update. “What could go wrong” I think to myself, I always like to update to make sure I have the latest and bet features.

No I find out to my horror that I’ve shot myself in the foot!
    What a pisser.

Anyone know if it’s possible to down grade to an earlier PS3 version so I can get psubuntu’d? (Who gives a flying fox about PSN?)

  38. GeoHot has done it, a PUB file will be releasing soon, be sure to watch his blog

  39. What does this do? Well it lets you keep the Other OS and benefit it true other firmware updates of sony, you will however need the custom frimwares I think, because of the Other OS.

  40. kozz

@Nick Bailey: you can’t downgrade since the firmware is kept in flash memory. Unless someone figures out how to do it with the Infectus modchip. It’s been done before, from 1.60 to 1.50.

@all: there’s more options to keep OtherOS than by joining the hacking arms race and becoming dependent on custom firmware. Sony has shown a few signs that it’s nervous about attention from the Federal Trade Commission about this. Sony, as one of the three Cell developers, profits from the sale of all new Cell products including IBM Bladecenters and Sony’s upcoming BCU-100. These high-priced, high-end machines are now the only Cell products available for professional use, since both the new and used markets for OtherOS ps3′s has been eliminated. Sony’s statements about “security” are suspicious in light of the fact that the drop of OtherOS from the Slim was recent and for cost-cutting, not security. In other words, Sony’s manipulating the market – price-gouging, or whatever it’s called. Destroying an already-sold product to increase demand for a new one, using “security” as a cover story.

If that’s really what Sony is doing, and I suspect it is, it’s illegal. Since the Federal Government owns research ps3′s, it involves taxpayer money too. I’ve already filed a complaint with the FTC to bring it to their attention. It takes 10 minutes to file a complaint, and anyone can do it. The more complaints there are, the more attention the FTC will pay. Try the Better Business Bureau too. As of April 18, Sony has ignored all the BBB complaints and has an F rating (they’ve always had an F, but there’s more unanswered complaints now which looks worse)

i use ubuntu my ps3.Freak and junkie sony get out my way .because future is otheros.Thank you ubuntu ps3 team.I watching you. Sorry my english isn’t good.I love ubuntu.

  42. I am surprised that the PSUbuntu team have taken this huge drawback easily. I thought I would come here and see people joining their hands to make Sony to hear us. I am a little disappointed because I thought PSUbuntu would be really pissed and not willing to take this that easy. But anyway, you guys are the ones that have expent all the effort, so I guess you know what you are doing.

  43. kiddykoff

    @kozz

do you have a link to your filings? or any other helpful links?

  44. Robertc1985

this is betamax all over again

  45. calagan

Finally a class action against Sony:

    http://ia331218.us.archive.org/2/items/gov.uscourts.cand.226894/gov.uscourts.cand.226894.1.0.pdf

I hope it goes through: the removal of OtherOS cannot go unpunished

  46. TK

This the last piece of locked down hardware I’ll ever buy, Sony had no god damn right to remove functionality of what I own. As a programmer, I hope the world allows me not to ever work for unethical companies such as Sony when I graduate.

  47. truth teller

Guys didnt you notice that story the same again?
The same was with ps2, when I bought it ,it was expensive.
Now ps2 cost nothing, and during its lifecycle sony also did what they wanted.
They removed ability to install linux and harddrive in slim ps2.
Now its the same story with ps3.
At first sony made it very overpriced, ripping off its customers,
then removed all features saying that its expensive and no-one wants to buy it.(but guys from sony it is you did it overpriced, so looks to me like it was planned from the very beginning)

What amazes me that no-one can punish Sony.

People dont buy products from sony ,otherwise sony always will do whatever they want ,even not asking opinions of its customers. We have to teach sony lesson that its wrong way they are going.

I learned something from my overpriced purchase of ps2 and decided to wait and not to buy overpriced ps3, and looks like it was right thing to do.
What to do if you dont want to feel like you spend a lot of money on PLAYSTATION and have nothing because Sony does what they want ? Just never buy sony products, as I do from now on. I have only ps2 slim with Black Rhino and psp with 5.50 GEN-d3 and those are the last products I bought from sony. This is it.

What I am upset about is that still out there are people who learn nothing from sony, but anyway its their problem. Sony just likes to do things not proffesionally but like toys.
I have ps2 and psp for games ,and run Linux Ubuntu and Kubuntu on my laptop –
    very simple and convenient.

  48. Has anyone tried a 3.30 update directly?
Might it be possible to install custom firmware soon?
I hope George Hotz pulls the trick.

    Let’s repeat all together:
‘ I will not buy any more Sony products’

  49. d3m0l0g1k

This is stupid. Sony is forcing me to buy another ps3 in order to be able to play any new games or blu rays int he future. that can’t be legal.

  50. d3m0l0g1k

-good thing I don’t buy Blu-Rays anymore.. I simply download the high def version of said movie to a flash drive, and plug it into my Ps3. Voila, Instant movies on deman, whatever I want, When I want.

  51. big 31

the linux is working or not on the fat ps3?

  52. Anonymous

geohot will save us, there will be a homebrew channel for the PS3 like the wii and everyone can run linux on the newest firmware. believe!

  53. darkcat

I gave up and updated since I wanted to keep playing games. I place no faith in geohot but I’m behind the lawsuits 100% and I hope for ether sony being slapped with several hundred million dollars in a judgment and/or make them put the feature back. PSubuntu was a valuable learning tool and I will put it to good use when I put PC ubuntu on my new computer.

  54. Janice

Well last I heard theres no less than 4 lawsuits against sony for this abysmal downgrade which is not only illegal its criminal as well, if any of us willfully broke into thousands of peoples systems and wiped their os or threatened them having all their serial ports & network ports disabled we’d be in prison in short order and never again see the light of day.

On mine I had no choice to refuse, for a short fraction of a second the tos/eula flickered on my screen the the “update” forced its way into my ps3 wiping my linux partition in the process. In all honestly a company this slimey isnt just a criminal operation but genuinely deserves to be sued into oblivion asap. My only hope is the PS3 technology will be acquired and developed by another firm who will make legit use of it. But this is unlikely as it has such a taint of fraud on it now that anyone not living on the moon will find it as desirable as enron shares.

  55. Clemens Stubbe

This is a major fail for Sony. As one of you pointed out earlier, it’s about the same as MS’s lousy factory standards, but this is close to being illegal. When you buy a product with a set of features, the seller of the product can’t force you to choose between features (online multiplayer/linux), so practically this is a crime, roughly in the same way as the whole Steve Jobs douchebaggery (not really a fellony, but sure immoral, harrasing and unethical as hell).
I’ve never used Ubuntu or Linux on my PS3, but it’s been a good reason for me to love my console for being able to do things way beyond the rest of the market. Now, I have no chance of installing Ubuntu – wich would have happened a long time ago, had I had a backup drive – plus my Wi-fi is terminally fucked. I still love my PS3, but this is a tremendous fail from Sonys side.

  56. Steve

I have just updated my PS3, and have found that I now cannot access my Ubuntu OS as a result. Sony sucks. Sony, this is corporate arrogance in the extreme.

  57. sony

Sorry, I suck. So, sue me sonny.

    -sunny SONY

  58. sony

    btw, i am using psubuntu.

    I still suck.

  59. guy 29

Please people who develops Ubuntu and Kubuntu- support Linux for ps3.
It is very important for community , and I am sure that one day we will have something like Kloader for ps2.
I very much like ps3 and want to have ability to install Linux on it , I am sure that one day
all limits(like no 3d support) will be resolved.
Please support ps3 with release of Ubuntu and Kubuntu ,Edubuntu and Xubuntu for it.
I am praying for you. Please dont stop. Release Linux for ps3.
Just have one question: Why dont you have the latest versions of Ubuntu for ps3 like Ubuntu LTS 10.04 ?

  60. I was just about to put down some of my hard earned money to buy a PS3 console.
One of the big attractions of buying a PS3 was that I thought I could also install a flavour of linux on it.

Luckily saw all these messages before I made a huge mistake by buying the PS3.

I AM NOT GOING TO BUY A PS3 NOW!!

I’ll probably do without a games console or who knows might just buy an xbox360.

What a pity. Sony has truly made a huge mistake with this.

  61. feilipu

OtherOS was the key reason why I bought a ps3. Although it also makes a cheap BlueRay player.

I used to be a big Sony supporter, but not any more.

Now Sony has dropped OtherOS, I’m keeping my 3.15 firmware, and will NEVER buy another Sony product, so long as I live.

So far they have missed out on over $2,500 of products I’ve purchased since 3.21 release (AV tuner, Camera) that would have been Sony purchases.

Over my lifetime, I expect that purely from this OtherOS fiasco, Sony will have cost themselves $50,000 out of my pocket.

Also, other people (friends, business associates, customers, family) who ask my opinion will now always get the answer, “anything, but Sony”.

Piss off the community, you get flow on.
    Suck on that Sony!

  62. feilipu

On a positive note, I just installed a small 32GB SSD and reloaded Ubuntu 10.4 LTS into my ps3. The SSD sure helps things along very very nicely.

Can higly recommend the use of Ubuntu 10.4 LTS, from here:
    http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/10.04/release/ubuntu-10.04-alternate-powerpc+ps3.iso

With LTS support we’ve got ps3ubuntu for a VERY long time.

  63. feilipu

Or select the ps3 Desktop version…
    http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/10.04/release/

  64. davtaingai

I read “manfi” long essay. But I have good reason to have PS3 runs Linux
I am the person just brought a used fat version PS3 mostly for Linux. I think many people may ask why just brought a netbook. Here is my use case. I have two sons that want to play basic game. So I need my box can play some nice games. They also want to play some internet games, like “monster truck game”. For myself, I want to watch internet movies from my 46 LED TV or browser internet (mostly text base news). Before, PS3 can do all these tasks. If I upgrade the BIOS, I have to set a mini computer next to my PS3. So I decide NOT to upgrade the BIOS. The only lost is I would not able to play PS3 internet games. Which is OK to me.

  65. MaLDiTo_TeXugo

I hate when a company spread such a good product like PS3 and, after hit the market, they just cut all functionality off.
I hope some day a “russian pirate engineer” will made a Mod PS3 Cell BE, with a SATA II generic Blue-Ray Drive, NO Hypervisor, Linux Ready with RSX 3D accell and runs pirate games!
    It will sell like water!

  66. d0nkeysh0t

Sony is not really a consumer friendly company.

  67. kollyter

Linux(Ubuntu,Kubuntu,Xubuntu,Edubuntu) is amazing thing. I can use my ps3 as a real
    computer, I am so happy.
It so bad that there is no guy like “Dark Alex” or similar who would teach Sony to behave politely with its customers and not remove anything but add something.
I am not going to upgrade because I am not so stupid to lose such good thing as usage of Linux on my PS3, so firmware 3.15 always and forever.
It would be nice if ps3 would be hacked, then everyone could use linux on ps3,even on slim version.
I want to make statement referring to Canonical:
Guys please dont stop to release ports of Ubuntu,Kubuntu,Xubuntu,Edubuntu for PS3 because I am not going to stop use Linux and I am sure that millions of ps3 users also.
PS3 with Linux on board always, everywhere and forever!!!!!!!

  68. JJ

@sony , from your POV, you should say sosumi instead of “so sue me”! – iJokes v1.0 Alpha

Sony need to get their facts straight. From now on, they need a homebrew firmwares channel for custom firmware that supports OtherOS. Luckily they didn’t delete the partition, so if they release a new firmware 3.90m5 with the help of homebrewers, it must have Other OS bootloading support. And maybe an Intel processor and a hypervisor that can select an unused processor for the OtherOS so you could try to install Windows (why you may want to do that I donnae know!)

  69. lucyloo

GUTTED!!!! I’ve just got myself a new 250gb ps3. And one of the reasons I got it was so I could use it as a computer as well as for games,. The 1st time i get it linked up with the internet it told me it needed to do an up date. If only i knew that me doing it would stop me being able to put Ubuntu on it. NOT HAPPY!!! I would of used the money for a computer instead!! Sony should of at lest given people a choice to accept that part of the up date. My friends just told me that she was using her ps3 with Ubuntu and when it asked to up date she didn’t think anything of it but it ended up wiping out 2yrs of her college course work. And now she’s going to fail her course. Not good. If anyone comes across a way to by-pass this firmware, i know a lot of people would be happy. But i know its down to Sony to change it back. So now I have to save up to buy a computer or laptop, which is a pain!!! Lucyloo xxx

PS3 is hacked!!!!!!! Jailbrake did its job!!!!!!!!!!
So everyone pray because hackers very soon will bring back ability to have Linux installed on ps3 , even on slim version!!!!!!!
    Sony lost this battle!!!!!!!
    Canonical and ps3 users won!!!!!!!!

  71. Serdar

I hate Sony for this situation. I hate the hacker who try to hack ps3 on linux. Because we can’t use Linux on ps3 because of fuckin hacker.

  72. Ralph

Screw Sony, on APRIL 1ST! DAMMIT

  73. Matteo

    Use AsbestOS!!!!

  74. 4lphamal3

I use iPod JB 3.15, I have debootstrapped a USB HDD, how would I proceed using AsbestOS to start my system from HDD?

  75. Orthopteroid

Will geohot’s release of the ps3 metldr keys bring this project back to life?

  76. DryQuLa

All private keys for the PS3 have been released by various hackers (fail0verflow, Mathieulh and Geohot mainly.) With AsbestOS, Linux can be run on the system again.

  77. guy

I do not want AsbestOS on my Slim—I want only UBUNTU…
Is It possible now to install UBUNTU on SLIM?

My approach will enable OtherOS to have the same access rigths as GameOS, it means access to Dispatcher Manager, Update Manager, VFLASH, HDD encryption/decryption, isolated SPUs and RSX of course.
GameOS is only good for games, for PS3 development and hacking is Linux or FreeBSD with GameOS rights are a lot better. And i want a clean approach for booting Linux, not like AsbestOS, it’ not very clean.

I have my loader for OtherOS bootloader ready now, will patch HV today and try it out in the evening, after that will report back. Stay tuned.

    Is that any better?

  79. DryQuLa

AsbestOS is a bootloader. What particular distro you run is up to you.

I have a PS3 Phat… the 40GB version. Had Sony Official Firmware (OFW) 3.30 when I bought it not even a month ago for $60. Now CFW 3.55.

Now it’s simple… just follow the instructions to install Custom Firmware (CFW) 3.55, which is the latest version right now. I have done this… and it’s running beautifully. Already have several games backed up and playing with MultiMan homebrew app, including GTA IV, Fallout New Vegas, and more.

Then follow the instructions to install OtherOS and Linux… I have not done this, YET… i need a larger HDD, or maybe better, a large external… but i will install it soon.

    Everything can be found here:
    http://ps3.dashhacks.com/downloads/

Trust peoplz…. this site isn’t dead! There are devs out there that will keep making Linux available on the PS3 and whatever comes out next too… HA HA SONY! The joke is on you… ’cause there will ALWAYS be a team of devs out there smarter and more capable… And you know what… the more security crap you throw at them… the smarter they will get. They will ALWAYS keep it real! Love ALL you devs out there for Sony and Android platforms… I like the rest of you devs too… just don’t use the platforms you develop for. lol.

I bought a ps3 because its feaure were like no other gaming system and yes i mean the install other os feature. I would buy only things that said Sony on them, even if it was expensive, because i trusted them and believed in them. I would regularly google them to read up about them, look up sony products in online store an go to the malls where there was a sony outlet store and would buy things like my ps3 80gig, ps3 games, my sony 32 ” inch LCD widescreen tv and sony CDRs and DVDRs.
I was planning on buying a bigger sony LCD widescreen tv and soround sound system
worth over $7000 dollars not including the taxes.
But now if they dont fix the install other os feature i will never buy anything from them again!

  87. I’ve already hacked the ps3 system. I don’t care about what sony’s engineer can do, they’ll never be able to cover all security holes, never, read this again slowly: “NEVER”.
I’ll be releasing the solution to get another OS be installed on this hardware. You’ll be noticed soon.
    Bye…

  88. sandile

sony. please, dont be so gay…

  89. sandile

sony. please, dont be so gay… if you no longer want us to buy your products all you have to do is take the other os option forever,,,,,

  90. Jeremy

Right. They did it out of security concerns and look what happened this past summer! PSN had to shut down for a while because some douchebags hacked into the network, putting everyone’s PSN account in jeapordy. And this was after Sony cut off Linux support. Let this be a lesson to you, Sony; THIS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DITCH OPEN-SOURCE AND STICK WITH CLOSED-SOURCE CRAP!

  91. stickdude

I know this makes you all mad at sony but it all comes down to one thing YOUR NOT PAYING FOR ONLINE PLAY SONYS LETTING YOU USE ALMOST EVERYTHING FOR FREE
