To resolve the "driver name" problem I renamed all instances of spu_fbdev to spufbdev and SPU_FBDEV to SPUFBDEV in source files. Everything else is done according to your howto.
Code:
#!/bin/sh

for i in `find xf86-video-spu`
do
sed s/spu_fbdev/spufbdev/g $i >$i.new
mv -f $i.new $i
sed s/SPU_FBDEV/SPUFBDEV/g $i >$i.new
mv -f $i.new $i
done
chmod 755 xf86-video-spu/configure

Also I renamed all source files respectively:
Code:
jussi@ps3:~/src$ find xf86-video-spu -name 'spu_fbdev*'
xf86-video-spu/src/.svn/text-base/spu_fbdev.c.svn-base
xf86-video-spu/src/spu_fbdev.c
xf86-video-spu/man/.svn/text-base/spu_fbdev.man.svn-base
xf86-video-spu/man/.svn/prop-base/spu_fbdev.man.svn-base
xf86-video-spu/man/spu_fbdev.man
jussi@ps3:~/src$ mv xf86-video-spu/src/.svn/text-base/spu_fbdev.c.svn-base xf86-video-spu/src/.svn/text-base/spufbdev.c.svn-base
jussi@ps3:~/src$ mv xf86-video-spu/src/spu_fbdev.c xf86-video-spu/src/spufbdev.c
jussi@ps3:~/src$ mv xf86-video-spu/man/.svn/text-base/spu_fbdev.man.svn-base xf86-video-spu/man/.svn/text-base/spufbdev.man.svn-base
jussi@ps3:~/src$ mv xf86-video-spu/man/.svn/prop-base/spu_fbdev.man.svn-base xf86-video-spu/man/.svn/prop-base/spufbdev.man.svn-base
jussi@ps3:~/src$ mv xf86-video-spu/man/spu_fbdev.man xf86-video-spu/man/spufbdev.man

I tried to google/search bit but didn't found what I looked for. So has anyone crossed topics or tried this on latest kernel (2.6.24) and ps3 firmware 2.10. Will it crash ubuntu or work?

OT: It might be good to add ps3 firmware version and used kernel version in HowTo's conserning hardware "hacks"? IMHO it's quite hard to try to figure out (guess) by posting date which versions could have been used in solutions.

This isn't a hack. This acceleration is achieved by legitimate use of the cell processor which Sony has actively encouraged.

It's not like the FIFO hack which was used before Sony closed it with the 2.10 firmware. It's very unlikely Sony would want to deny us full access to the cell.

Has anyone tried playing back HD content with this method yet? if HD content plays smoothly then it is reason enough for me to invest in a PS3.

If the OP or anyone else needs a source of HD content just contact me I can put up a sample file somewhere... or check any number of other web sources there are lots of places where you can download free 720p or 1080i or 1080p sample videos.

Hi,

I found a couple of HD movie trailers. The results were not great.

Mythtv struggled to play the 480p movie. While the framerate was fine, there was noticeable artefacts on the display. Very strange. It's worth noting that I often watch DVDs (ripped onto my mythtv backend) and recorded TV shows without issues at PAL resolutions. The display is running at 720p though.

The same stream at 720p was clean, but sadly, jerky. Parts of the file which had less motion on played fine, very smooth, but lots of movement did upset the playback. It would play about 2-3 seconds really smooth, and then pause for half a second.

Neither stream played sound. I don't know why. I think the stream I used had some dodgey encoding. If you're able to provide something which is 'known good', I'll be happy to test.

All of this was in mythtv. mplayer or others may have better luck. YMMV.

The main issue isn't with displaying the video any more. It's now with decoding it. Work is being done by the same guy who made the video driver to make his medialib decode mpeg streams with the SPUs. Once headway is made on this, and applications actually start to use the medalib, then we'll see some really good quality HD recordings in Linux on the PS3.

We know that the PS3 can physically do it, as the GameOS can play blu-ray discs. Granted, the GameOS has access to the RSX, but at the same time, it's been leaked that it only needs to use 2 SPUs anyway.

So, it will come. Patience is needed.

As a side note, my main PC had the same issues with the 420p stream. And it didn't even play the 720p stream at all as it doesn't have enough video memory apparently.

After copying a Van Helsing 720p WMV file to the PS3's local drive, mplayer via mythtv worked very well! Top reported about 32% cpu usage.

I noted that I wasn't able to stream that 720p WMV or a 480p MPG file via SMB. That was over an 802.11g network.

I have ordered an HDTV tuner, so that I can test full mythtv functionality.

Thanks for all your work! Smile

I am happy to report that after switching from Samba to NFS, MPG and WMV videos streaming work very well. I watched the 720p Van Helsing and an entire family guy episode without it crashing.

i happen to know that the ps3 is very capable of HD playback in linux. there is an mplayer howto (that i thought ribs had something to do with) somewhere on this forum that i was able to use to play elephant's dream, which is a computer animated movie made completely with open source software, and available for free download in 1080p. it was flawless. it had to be played with the x-server turned off in the terminal, but it did play smoothly with synced sound and all that.

p.s. if anyone is looking for an HD tuner, i suggest checking out the hdhomerun. its by far the easiest (and very cheap) tuner to set up with myth.

Thanks for the excellent work getting mythtv going. This just saved me buying a PC as a frontend!
I do get the occasional freeze - which you're aware of - and I was wondering if there's a fix for this in the pipeline?

Hi, I don't make the driver itself, I mearly put up instructions.

The author is busy refining the spu medialib and learning how to make best use of the SPUs. Further work on these would benefit us as well.

I don't know why it freezes. I've found that compiling 0.20-fixes from svn helped a lot of the crashing from within mythtv, and the sound never randomly cuts out like it used to. Generally, I've found now that if the recording starts to play correctly, it will finish playing.

My englih is poor (im from poland :/) and i dont understand this :
"If you have not installed a mythtv-frontend on your PS3 Ubuntu installation, then do so now. As some hints, I'd suggest doing a bare-bones install from the ubuntu disc (type 'cli' at the inital boot prompt), and then install the ubuntu-mythtv-frontend package. This will bring in everything you need, including a bare-bones X installation, and will bring up the frontend automatically at boot. Simple. "
When i type cli instalation start (im usesing Ubuntu Playstation 3 Desktop PC iso file) and i dont know where i can choose ubuntu-mythtv-frontend package ?? After instalation i have some problems and i have to reinstall linux (im working on this now) ... Can someone explain me how to install this frontend? Sorry im new in linux im use mplayer-ps3 for now but i want try mythtv for hd movies...
I have too install linux 2nd time beacuose after this i cant run gnome again Exclamation Exclamation Evil or Very Mad Mad

As I said, this guide assumes you know what you are doing with mythtv. There are plenty of mythtv guides out there, including on the ubuntu wiki, so you should consult these. I personally wouldn't suggest trying mythtv with such limited Linux experience.
