How did you get it to work? I've been trying all day, and haven't been able to do it, and mind you I have been cutting and pasting the commands, so I haven't been making errors.

Also, your using xubuntu, is their a significant difference between the two?

I followed all steps only ignoring the fact that i'm missing the "test" folder.
And i don't think there is much of a difference between Ubuntu and Xubuntu.

I tried this but i'm unable to start hidd
Can't open HIDP control socket: Address family not supported by protocol

BTW: can someone check the content in /lib/firmware ?
For me its empty! Perhaps i'm missing some firmware for bluetooth...

BTW: you can directly access the content of the ISO from here:

I had the same error message:
Can't open HIDP control socket: Address family not supported by protocol

And I think I've read from somewhere that if this message appears, some settings has to be changed in menuconfig when building the kernel. So I think we have still some problems with this kernel...

Also, I have noticed that my PS3 won't restart or shutdown. I have to manually switch it of from the power button... Very annoying... Does anyone have the same problem?

About the content in /lib/firmware
I have three folders in
/lib/firmware:
2.6.20-15-powerpc64-smp,
2.6.20-16-powerpc64-smp and
2.6.22-14-powerpc64-smp

So I don't have any folder related to the kernel 2.6.23 neither.

Hm ok then the only solution would be to compile it on our own Sad
Doesn't someone else already compile it so he could share a package?

You could try to link the .22 firmware to the new kernel

Code:
sudo ln -s /lib/firmware/2.6.22-14-powerpc64-smp /lib/firmware/2.6.23

I had same problems with 2.6.23, now with 2.6.24-rc6 no problems with shutdown/reboot. OTOH, wifi is still not working - everything seems to be ok, but no ip from access point (I have tried with three different ap's). I'm not sure whether hardy is broken, kernel is broken or I'm broken. Or we all are Confused

But anyway if somebody want to give it a try I have 2.6.24-rc6 as deb packages (image and headers). Source is from (pulled 02 Jan 2008):
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/geoff/ps3-linux.git

I have changed following:
applied a pair of patches:
UDF 2.50:
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1795804&group_id=295&atid=300295
PS3FB fix:
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/geoff/cell/ps3fb-fix-gpu-cmd-buff-size-2.10-linux-2.6.23-20071023.diff

Changed ipv6 and related to be compiled as modules so them can be quickly disabled if necessary

Edit: image and headers are available as a torrent:
http://torrents.thepiratebay.org/3958374/PS3_2.6.24-rc6-powerpc64-smp-custom.3958374.TPB.torrent

Ok, just for the sake of troubleshooting, what was the method of installation of Gutsy?

So, far this is what I have used;

Alternate CD October version * (Now there is a Nov version, is that what everyone is using?)

After the install, it says there are updates available. I skipped the updates, and tried to get the wifi working, first. Should I install the updates first?

Then I followed the procedures, and it didn't work, so I actually had to manually copy the existing boot files, with a .old extension in order for the "old" to work at kboot.

So, before I reinstall this again;

1 - Should I use the 15 Nov Alternate CD?

2 - Should I install the updates before trying to get wifi to work first?

Any help will be appreciated.

Look at my first post. I said this solution only works if you followed the instructions in a previous post (Which I linked too). The previous post was supposed to fix it for the framework 2 update but 2.10 messed it up and this method fixed it for 2.10.

Don't worry it's not needed.

Once we've verified that we can boot up using test, can we then move all that info to the "linux=" line and just hit enter to boot?

Would anyone be kind enough to post an http link to that rpm2cpio.tgz link? sorry, been having to do this right off of my ps3 browser because of a dead computer >.> All I can find is ftp links and pages that only have the perl script, but the ps3 browser doesn't have the option to save pages . Damn you Sony! Smile

I know, i ended up having to do this from my computer because of that, but i'm surprised the ps3 doesn't have the "save link target" feature in its browser as the psp does

A I am confused with the editing the kboot.conf part. Do I just put this "test='/boot/vmlinux-2.6.23 initrd=/boot/initrd.img-2.6.23 root=UUID=48124dc5-2c8f-43d0-a210-0b6549ffde56 quiet splash' " at the end, or do I put this
"test=UUID'/boot/vmlinux-2.6.23 initrd=/boot/initrd.img-2.6.23 root=UUID=48124dc5-2c8f-43d0-a210-0b6549ffde56 quiet splash' " (obviously replacing the word "UUID" with the UUID code)?
