I guess people have various reasons for installing Ubuntu on their PS3s. Personally I want to make it a media center for playing music and video and downloading torrents and podcasts via rss. It's also nice to be able to browse the web from the couch.
Some ideas came up in the blog post why ubuntu on a PS3, but more arguments are welcome here. Why would you like to run Ubuntu on your Playstation? |

| I'd like to see it as a media server for my home network. Streaming music from the PS3 to Amarok via wireless network would be awesome. |

| I like the ability to play the old school games that I grew up with as well as the web browser. I am sure that we will start finding many new ways to take advantage of Linux on the PS3. |

|
|
Primarily for a HD Mythtv frontend. I had originally tried an xbox which choked on the hd (which is why it is now in the bedroom) so I have been stuck with a desktop in the living room for about a year while I have been waiting for the ps3.
I am still trying to get it working although illness, hardware problems with my backend and the misses wanting to watch tv have limited the amount of time I can work on it. Searches have not turned up any really promising information either with no direct access to the RSX chip and major code changes to access the SPUs. I hope to be able to attempt feisty soon though, and that it brings with it more efficient use of the ps3.
If anyone can direct me to information on this I would be very grateful.

| I plan on using the playstation 3 to install mythtv. I do not care about PVR featurs, i only want to use the thing as a frontend for watching divx movies aswell as playing SNES/Sega Genesis Games. Personaly i feel the PS3 has more potential than any preious console with linux installed such as XBOX, Dreamcast, playstaion 2 etc. |

| I am currently in the process of getting my new plextor usb tv tuner set up with mythtv on my ps3. I just got a kernel recompiled last night with the updated settings. I plan to outline that process on this site when it is complete. There is a bunch of info out there for setting it up with a gentoo release but I havent seen any info specific to ubuntu. |

I bought the PS3 to install linux and house ALL of my electronic media in one functional arcade box for around $1000, using stuff I have and scrounge.
The box will house my computer, stereo, vcr, tape deck, monitor, projection monitor, music collection, photo collections, all games, documents, and be functional + aesthetic enough to go on the back wall of the living room.
I was thinking 5 years, but this site has at least halved that ( ) with controller support and many, many, mature and helpful posts. |

Why Linux on the PS3?
Linux on the PC lacks one crucial element, an abundance of commercial games.
We are forced then to own, install, and boot up an OS that makes our skin crawl, just to play games.
If we were to have a next gen came console that ran Linux, we wouldnt have this issue. We could use Linux, and when we want to play a game, just reboot to the game, or its even possibly (and viable) to get Sony to give us the ability to launch a game from within Linux, solving this problem.
Why PSUbuntu specifically?
When I started using Linux many years ago, I played with many distros, and was never really happy with any of them. I grew to dislike many of the core and packaging systems. The distributions that were pretty good all seemed to have one thing in common, they were all Debian based.
I have always been drawn to Debian based distros, and Ubuntu is at the top of the food chain in this category. |

I too wanted the PS3 to be a Mythtv frontend. However it does not work because of lack of HW support.
Does anyone have this up and running? What are the latest news. |

I'd rather use it as a movie player, game console, and music/photo/video device from its native mode.
Those features are more likely to become features of the PS3 in XMB mode. It makes better sense too, considering the awesome audio capabilities of the PS3 in its native mode, and the media available to use it. It is already possible to stream high quality audio and video from the PS3 over wireless to the PSP, so I don't see it being too far off before they use the BT to stream to a device that plugs into a stereo or to wherever your "Amarok" is at. Making those devices that would be required work under Linux as well would require driver releases too.
Many of the features you guys want will be part of what the PS3 incorporates natively, and better at it since it will have access to other parts of the hardware on the MOBO that the Linux OS does not get, like the A/V subsystem. Linux gets a very cursory two channel audio capacity, and, as we already know, a very slow video capacity, which is not related to the A/V subsystem so much as it is to how much of it Sony lets us get at. I'd bet that once an application that plays HD DVD (from the USB XBox 360 HDDVD drive) and BluRay under Linux gets made, it won't be able to handle the audio like the native mode does.
I don't really see the attraction of using it as a media server. PCs are far better suited, and their sound and video I/O is far better adapted. Just where are the A/V inputs on a PS3? A media server is more than merely streaming stored digital media, it has to pass and switch external signals as well. |

I have no intention to use it as a media server. I just want to use it as a client, specifically a MythTv frontend.
If I could somehow access the MythTv backend (on my PC) from XMB then I would be more than happy. |
