|
Download Xubuntu PPC Version.
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/ports/releases/7.10/release/xubuntu-7.10-desktop-powerpc+ps3.iso
Install using on screen instructions.
Once installed do the following :
Go to System > Services.
Only have the following ticked (UNTICK THE REST) :
CPU Frequency Manager (Can also be unticked??)
Graphical Login Manager
Hotkeys Management (Can also be unticked???)
System Communication Bus
That is pretty much my set up. Using the default window manager Xfce.
It is so so fast compared to Ydl or Ubuntu its unreal. I have tested one video playback so far using a wmv file and I got 0% lag or audio unsync. Haven't tested other video formats but I can say the wmv file lagged out on Ydl and Ubuntu.
Try it for yourself if you don't believe me. If you have any issues regarding this or questions on how to do stuff in xfce (like shortcuts etc) just ask here and I will help you out _________________ Proud Administrator @ PSUbuntu.com

| While we're on it, you don't need the graphical login manager either, do you? |

| I installed Xfce with an apt-get after I installed the regular Ubunutu Desktop. Is this any different? I also turned off my gdm and am looking at tweaking the kernel. |

Probably the same yeah. Unless Xubuntu's core is less ram abusive than the regular Ubuntu. I really don't know. _________________ Proud Administrator @ PSUbuntu.com

I personally prefer to use a window manager called Fluxbox. You will see a huge difference in speed by using Fluxbox compared to a full desktop managing environment such as Gnome and XFCE. I also have GDM disabled on my PS3. Having GDM disabled frees up over 20MB of system RAM.
I would also recommend disabling any system services in /etc/rc2.d/ that you do not need. I choose to disable my logs such as sysklogd and klogd and services such as cron and rsync. To disable a service from the command line, just cd to /et/rc2.d then use the mv tool to rename said service. For example to disable klogd run
sudo mv S11klogd K11klogd
I also created a similar thread on speeding up the PS3 that can be found here.

I have not used XFCE in some time but I believe since XFCE uses GTK, you should be able to use any Gnome GTK 2.0 theme. I would suggest taking a look at the themes that are available over at xfce-look.org. There are even some XFCE specific themes available there.

As an added note, if you have previously installed Ubuntu with Gnome, you can easily install XFCE on your Ubuntu system by running this at the command line. Then you can choose to log into XFCE from the session menu in GDM.
| Code: | | sudo apt-get install xfce4 |
This is how I would recommend installing XFCE on your system. This way you will not get all of the heavy Xubuntu stuff installed on your system. |

Good ideas! The only thing I would add/change is that I think it better to not rename services in case you might need them later for another package you might add, etc. I like to simply do the following:
sudo chmod -x /etc/rc.d/rc.blah ( or /etc/rc2.d/rc.blah and so forth)
Thus you just make them nonexecutable when you boot and they do not start. If you do incline to rename them i would recommend something just like:
sudo mv S11klogd S11klogd.bak (or something along those lines + a chmod -x on the file)
