Alpha 3 is out, so I am downloading the PS3 version from: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/daily/current/

There is also a url for a daily build from July 22nd. No idea which is better or if there is any difference. Anyone got any ideas?

i think this error is caused by burning the install cd to a dvd insteasd of a cd, try burning again on a low speed to a cd. This fixed it for me

I installed Karmic today, I think it was the 8/24/09 iso. I couldn't install from the Alternate iso; installer said it couldn't detect any cdrom drives.

So I installed from the Desktop iso;
install_nosplash video=ps3fb:mode:131 (or 3 or whatever, for you.)
The graphical installer is So slow, but the text-based installer couldn't find packages at all, so oh well.

If you want to use kboot (which I like better than petitboot, because I can add kernel options at the prompt), then you have to make sure you partition your /etc and/or /boot drive as ext3 and not ext4.

Snes9x works now with much better performance than I was getting under Jaunty (about the same now as under Intrepid).

Unfortunately, I haven't gotten sixaxis over bluetooth to work (whereas it worked great for me with Jaunty thanks to falkTX's updated scripts.) Something to do with HAL going away in 9.10, or did I dream that?

However, for reasons I don't understand, my wireless USB mouse doesn't seem to work with my 9.10 install. It worked in the Live installer, if I unplugged and reconnected the receiver (though the Live environment was all so slow that I'm not sure whether I needed to do that.) My wired USB mouse works fine. Annoying, I dunno.

I may be able to answer some questions about this process.

I downloaded the Xubuntu 9.10 daily from 8.31.09, and during install it had no drivers for the CD ROM. I tried a few times, and kept hitting that wall. Strange that during install from a CD that it can't find the CD ROM anymore. Very strange...

Try the desktop installer, (not alternate)

install_nosplash at the kboot prompt

bring something else to do.

@barrybarrykelly: I used a CD burned on 4x the slowest my drive will go, and had the same problem.

@Refried: I don't think I used the alternate, unless you are saying I shouldn't use the one that says it is for the PS3. Can you share the exact URL of the iso you say worked?

Yes, I was saying not to use "karmic-alternate-powerpc+ps3.iso". When I used it, it gave me the same "can't detect cdrom drive" error you got. I used "karmic-desktop-powerpc+ps3.iso" and was able to successfully (though very slowly) install.

Unfortunately, it looks like desktop/ps3 isn't being built anymore, because there's none at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/daily/current/ at the time of this posting. So! I guess your only alternative now is to say a prayer and try the newest "alternate" installer.

Let me know if it works? :-\

Has anyone actually had a karmic install work with a "304R" drive (brand-new 80G, just pre-slim), instead of the 302R that shows up in google? I dug into the "couldn't detect cdrom" a bit, and found this:

Code:
ps3_system_bus_match:362: dev=7.0(sb_01), drv=7.0(ps3rom): match
scsi1 : ps3rom
scsi 1:0:0:0: CD-ROM   SONY   PS-SYSTEM 304R 5044 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0
scsi 1:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 5

and in fact it created /dev/sg0 which is the generic scsi low-level interface (ie. "well, it's a scsi device but we don't know what to do with it") but no /dev/sr0... that was with daily/current/karmic-alternate-powerpc+ps3.iso from 9/9/2009...

Also there's no sr_mod in /lib/modules, but I don't see one on my desktop post 2.6.27 either...
