I commented on this over in the karmic thread, but about an 80G machine; it might be useful to know: if you go to a shell (hit alt-left arrow until you see a "hit enter to open a shell", or just select the start-a-shell option from the installer menu) and you run
Code:
cat /proc/scsi/scsi

what drive version shows up? For example, I have
Code:
CD-ROM   SONY   PS-SYSTEM 304R 5044

but most google hits say 302R and either 4109 or 4084... which makes me wonder if this is "newer drives that don't work yet"...

I have the same machine(60gb) and problem as sega master.

And, the version i got was:

302R REV:4112

I also have a Samsung external DVD(SE-S084) and tried to run it of there and it didn't work either. Is there another way to install karmic-9.10-ps3? Like make it work from my 8gb thumb drive?

I'm having the same problem on the same cd-rom.

Vendor:Sony Model: PS-System 302R Rev: 4112
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun:00
Type:CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 00

PS3 is 80GB OTB.

Something wrong with the model of cd-drive?

Does 9.04 work for you? If so, then obviously not (since it's the code that changed, not the hardware...)

Hi all - I'm new to the PS3 Ubuntu stuff but I've been USING Ubuntu since the day it was released (literally!). I've had the YellowDog Linux distro downloaded for my PS3 for months, but never got around to installing it - and today decided to try Ubuntu instead. It looks like I'm getting the same error as everyone else in the thread here though. When it's time to scan for the CD-ROM drive, it can't find it (or it's drivers, or something). In the hope of being able to help the developers, I've also copied down the output of /proc/scsi/scsi....

Vendor: Sony
Model: PS-SYSTEM 304R
Rev: 5056
Type: CD-ROM
ANSI SCSI Revision: 00

Someone mentioned another karma-specific post. If this needs to go there, feel free to redirect it or tell me (how) to do it. :) If there are any other log files that might help, I can try to get those as well.

Thanks! It looks like this distro is really coming along well!

Oh - I forgot.... I used the bootloader (is that the right term?), otheros.bld that the instructions said would allow the use of ext4 filesystem (can't remember the name at the moment - petite something maybe?). I can also try a different one for troubleshooting purposes if requested.

You mean petitboot (with the black gui). I added it to the instructions two days ago :P.

It seems that the latest daily build is working again:

I "fixed" it by switching back to 9.04 for now, since I noticed the CD issue on a non-PS3 machine and figured something must be up. That's what you get for being an early adopter. :)

I don't have my networking on the PS3 figured out yet - it worked during install, but not actually using the OS - so I haven't tried the upgrade to karmic yet. I have on other machines though and it's beautiful.

I'll just figure that this is giving me time to find out what is possible with the PS3 while I'm working out bugs. I use a DAW that lets you process audio on remote computers, but I'm not sure if it'll do so on computers with different processors (ironically I'm using a Mac - which WAS PPC a few years ago - oh well!).
