Hey all. I'm running Ubuntu Jaunty, and my sound works fine in, say, rhythmbox.

I primarily use snes9x-gtk, though this problem persists in snes9xexpress, or even if I just use snes9x from the terminal.

The thing is, the sound was perfectly fine when I first installed it. It only started acting up when I shutdown and restarted it the next time. Now it's extremely choppy.

Btw, when I run snes9x-gtk from the terminal, I notice that it uses OSS. Is this default behavior? Is there a way to change this to ALSA or something?

Anyhow, if anyone has some potential solutions, I'm all ears. Thanks in advance!

Same problem here. Tried all frequencies and other parameters.

Arg. So this might be a common-ish problem?

See, the damndest thing was, the first time I installed Jaunty sound was perfect. Then a day later it started spazzing out; now even on a reinstall it's messed up by default.

I found a solution (finally!):

Do (at the terminal):
> sudo apt-get install alsa-oss
> aoss snes9x-gtk

aoss redirect's snes9x's OSS library calls to ALSA audio libraries. aoss is actually just a script that forces some runtime library linkings. It may be possible to force this at compile-time instead, allowing you to run snes9x-gtk without aoss. Although, a shell alias of "aoss snes9x-gtk" to "snes9x-gtk" would practically do the same thing.

Great tip! Thanks :D
