Today is the official release of Ubuntu 8.10 “Intrepid Ibex”, and for the first time we have a working PS3-version (alternate installation) out on the same day as the other platforms. We have updated the psubuntu.com installation instructions with a detailed walk-through. You should also check out the Intrepid Release Notes on the wiki.

  1. Hi there,
    Good news, thanks for this

Any new information on the PS3-patched mplayer ?
Is this still the only way to actually read video files? or are these dedicated chipsets managed natively in PS3-ubuntu?
Do we need a new patched-mplayer release for 8.10 ?

The last time I checked (gutsy gibbon I think), it was nice to have a firefox/thunderbird/pidgin environment on a large full-HD TV, but it was not really a computer (decoding any video file was impossible, same as streaming from a DLNA-compliant NAS, encoding files (video or audio) with the full PS3 power and so on…)

    Thank you

  2. YellowDog

    Use Xine,it’s working OK.
But QQ in Pidgin can NOT work normally.

  3. Okay, the torrents have been posted to cdimage.ubuntu.com, and I’m currently seeding all variations at a combined ~1.1MB/sec:
    Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop, Server, and Alternate (i386 & AMD64) and Ubuntu 8.10 PS3 Alternate, and xUbuntu 8.10 PS3 Alternate.

Enjoy the bandwidth, courtesy of intrinsyx.com, supported by ipnetworksinc.net!

I have been using Xubuntu 7.10 for months. I plan to install the released Xubuntu 8.10 ppc+ps3 iso today. Has anyone else tried this? I think we can agree that in theory Xubuntu will make better use of the PS3 limited RAM than plain Ubuntu will.

  5. Hi
Great work! Just one problem, my keyboard+mouse stops working as soon as the desktop been drawed, it works during the logon to Gnome. Any suggestions?

It worked in a previous release of yours.

  6. Tom

Great, works perfectly, only problem is the otheros.bld

when I try to return to the ps3 Xbar by using boot-game-os it days it can’t find /dev/ps3flash,

the old hold the power button down trick when turning on still works, so I’m not too miffed, but still better to just type this than have to use the PS3′s reset features

  7. Tom

Oh yeah other comments, VLC worked fine on 7.10 on PS3, displayed video at proper frame rate, but was just a little pixelated, this is opposite, displays at proper resolution, but seems to be missing frames out when in full or almost full screen.

    I went straight to:

sudo apt-get install libxvidcore4 lame vlc

as soon as install had finished and had booted. all went fine. Detected the wireless network hardware during setup but I have no wireless network (waiting to buy a good wireless-n router) to test whether this actually worked. Normal network needed no fiddling around with the get working, unlike 7.10, and it may have detected this from my previous install but setup even ran in 1080p, so didn’t have to mess about with ps3videomode either.

  8. Jonathan

Is it safe to update to 8.10 from within 7.10?

  9. solfuries

to boot back to XMB from intrepid type: Game
Read the release notes for other tidbits…

  10. ThyMaster

Is it just me or are there other:
My PS3 won’t load Ubuntu 8.10 at all. It’s stuck right at the boot system screen :o (

  11. FredTech

ThyMaster: Did you try upgrading OtherOS in the XMB menu before starting the installer?

  12. ThyMaster

    @FredTech:
    Doh…, you’re right. That did the trick…
    THX!

  13. leo

    working no thanks

  14. Fabyao

Guys is there a way to play encrypted DVDs?? The DVD region check can be by-passed under Ubuntu but I am having issues playing Encrypted DVDs. Is there a tutorial I can follow??? I have all the decryption libraries installed but no luck.

If there is no way to play DVDs under ubuntu, I personally think there is no point installing linux as all I want is to be able to use my PS3 as a media player (center) that CAN play DVDs… Obviously if you are a game developer or like to play Arcade games with emulators or like Ubuntu in general then ubuntu is certainly the best distro for PS3. Thanks

  15. Kevin

tried xubuntu this morning, It wont play back video properly and I cant navigate the file system as it closes the window as soon as its opened :( Its also slow.

    Downloading ubuntu now.

    Hope its better

  16. McDuck

    @ Fabyao

Encrypted DVD playback using the Blu-ray drive is not possible due to hypervisor restrictions put in place by Sony.

A cheap and simple workaround is to purchase an external XBox 360 HD-DVD drive for encrypted DVD playback/and ripping under PS3 Linux.

  17. Fabyao

    @McDuck

Thank you for the info. I have a Japanese (NTSC-J) PS3 my problem is that I cant play PAL Dvds due to the stupid DVD region check which does not happen under linux.
Now under linux i cant play encrypted DVDs due to hypervisor…vicious circle.
If I could reverse engineer my PS3 firmware and remove the DVD region check as well as hypervisor. Does anybody has a custom ps3 firware ?? Well I can dream. Thanks again McDuck.

  18. solfuries

Anyone else unable to play videos with VLC? I can’t user totem because I don’t have all the codecs, but VLC will not play anything whatsoever. It just opens the program and then sits there, and will not start playback on any video, Help!?!?!

  19. Daz_Genetic

I have the exact same problem that Anders H is having. Everything installs flawlessly, boots fine, then as soon as I type in my password and get into the desktop, my mouse pointer freezes and I can’t use the keyboard. Tried multiple mice and keyboards and I’m getting the same thing.

You can tell the system is still running fine as the bluetooth icon and various other notifiers come up after the mouse and keyboard stop working.

Anyone got a solution, or at least some advice?

  20. Ville Määttä

I’ve got a problem with keyboard too. Logitech Di Novo wireless, working just fine with the kboot screen but looses connection as soon as 8.10 has booted. Doesn’t even work in the login screen. Can’t get the connection even though I’m using the dongle and not the built-in BT.

  21. refriedbeans

I downloaded a powerpc ps3 iso of 8.10 from torrent.ubuntu.com, but when I try to install ubuntu on the ps3, it fails to install and says a few files are corrupt. I’m wondering if it was the wrong ISO to download. I’ll download the ISO that’s posted on this blog.

  22. Daz_Genetic: I reinstalled it yesterday, works now! Unplugged all my Usb-equipment except keyboard+mouse during setup and boot.

  23. chrisw

Notice Jonathan’s comment about safety. I downloaded Ibex earlier in October and things went haywire on my ps3. Had to reload and am using 7.10. I notice no reply to “is it safe” to upgrade directly without the alternate CD. Is it????

  24. chris

installed 8.10 everything was smooth, wireless keyboard and mouse work fine till I login, then everything stops working?

Is there a fix for this

  25. Ok, installed it over my old 7.?? (gutsy gibbon) installation
    * No pb – except the installation (unpack) was sloooooooooow (almost 2 hours to unpack everything)
    * wlan0 is now recognized during installation
    * The OS is still slow but usable
    * ‘trying VLC and everything to see if it can read videos.

You still have to remember the /etc/kboot.conf /etc/ tip to use a full HD resolution

to boot back to PS3 => game, not the old boot-game-os

  26. Michael rempes

    Hi,

I just installed this and I have to say as a clean install it certainly seems to be a better start than 7.1

After a few days of battling with it when I was using 7.1 I managed to display 1080p full screen on my 40″ bravia using this link

    http://psubuntu.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13

Well i just used the same method on 8.1 and its corrupted the kboot.conf file.

For some reason the xorg.conf file on my installation of 8.1 was blank.

Naturally I didn’t edit this which I suspect is why Im currently having to reinstall ubuntu 8.1

  27. The Prodejeff

    Hello everyone,

Can some of you please help me, I’m trying to install 8.10 but it keeps asking about cd-rom drivers. The whole linux on ps3 starts to irritate me. If try ed yellow dog linux 6 again for the 3ed time, tried to configure full hd mode nothing works I have done everything the web site tells me to do. Downloaded opensuse 11.0 for ps3 it doesn’t boot up or install. What a fucking mess has it become. It seems the only stable os for ps3 is still ubuntu 7.10 can someone help how I can install the alternate version of ubuntu 8.10 is there a way to bypass the whole cd-rom issue.

Are they gonna release a graphical installer for ps3 ubuntu 8.10.

But there’s one thing for sure I throwing away that yellow dog linux wat a crap it is and opensuse doesn’t install it keep hanging at ”searching drivers … ok”

Sorry I’m a bit frustrating about the whole linux on ps3 thing maybe I’m gonna go back to 7.10.

I hope someone of you can help me with my problems and may some good tips.

  28. qidon

Do a torrent search for xubuntu-8.10-alternate-powerpc+ps3.iso. This is by far the best linux version I have tried on PS3. Make sure that you load the otheros.bld from the XMB. Then format the hard drive from there as well. Improvements I’ve noticed over 7.10 so far: Recognized my ethernet connection immediately, Comes with Firefox 3.03, fbset corrects overscan (black borders). Couple of bugs include my bluetooth keyboard is recognized an connects, but doesn’t work. Mouse works fine though. The icons on the desktop disappear (known bug). Overall though, this is a fast and functional OS. My next goal is to get my PS3 to print over my wireless network. I can only find an i386 linux driver for my printer though.

  29. The Prodejeff

    He everyone,

Thanks for the tip but it was a little to late because I installed succesfully the Ubuntu 8.10. I wrote about the cd-rom problem, so out of frustration I eject the cd out of my ps3 and then this came on the screen (or something like that) ´´Can´t mount the cd-rom, put back the cd-rom´´, it was something like that.

And I really wanted to stop but hé, another try, another wasted minutes out of my life. When rejected the cd the ps3 started to load all kinds of modules … a light point in my life. I fallowed the installation step on psubuntu and yes it fucking works.

It´s a little bit slow, but it works acceptable not great but acceptable.

I can view quicktime trailers on apple.com with mplayer-mozilla plugin, I tested some video file on some cheap free porn site´s and it works great, accept full screen and the movie breaks. Don´t know if this is a mplayer issue or just the cheap porn site.

for flv files I use gnash-mozilla plugin, it is watchable but not great result but a good start.

I can play not-encrypted dvd´s via totem-xine but I can´t play encrypted dvd´s al do libdvdcss is installed.

Had some problems with vlc, when playing a avi file xvid/mp3 there were green verticale line´s, it´s fixed don´t know how I fixed it.

But my overall conclusion is that it was worth the try. But Damm, what took it long to install.

If you installed it don´t forget to go to ´´system->preference->sessions´´ to un-check some upstart items, You can find what you can uncheck on this site.

Oke, well this has been one frustrating trip but in the end it work acceptable.

Many thanks to all you programmers out there who made this distro.

Lets hope that sony opens the rsx or that they slime line the ps3 and put more memory in the machine for better web serving and other ´´what to do´´ things for the ps3.

Or lets prey the ps4 has at least 2 gig´s of main (work) memory.

    Gtz The Prodejeff

  30. The Prodejeff

    Oh I forgot,

Ubuntu gave me this notice onscreen ´´No common cd-rom drive was detected´´ and after that I ejected the cd out of my ps3.

Has anyone gotten wifi to work on this build?

if so…………..with wep, wap, or what?

I’ve tried for ages in 7.1 and 8.1 and I cant connect to my home wifi.

    Also,

Has anyone had any success with an apple bluetooth keyboared (silver one) and bluetooth mighty mouse?

I’m having a lot of trouble with those as well.

    Finally,……………how about flash.

  32. Ottawa Canada

is this only me or everyones ahaving issue with the wifi ?

i checked my kernel -in terminal $ uname -r (showed me kernel 2.6.25) – i tried to downgrade/install kernel 2.6.22 with no luck – is this only me ?

    your help is much appreciated

    Ottawa, Canada

  33. Ottawa Canada

i made a mistake – i downgrade the kernel and now i cannot boot into my ubuntu – lol – someone warned me about it – but – meh – its too late now – i am reinstalling it and next thing i wud do is uninstall metwork-manager package and install .deb package for wicd – will update yall if success

  34. Kevin

Ubuntu is now installed and running fine :) totem is still crap , but with some fiddling I can get vlc to work full screen without dropping frames or green lines (interlace options) .
Is there an easy way to get rid of the black boarders?

  35. Hi,

I just installed 8.10 with the hope of using it as a front-end for my mythbuntu server.

I can’t get wifi working though… anyone succeed in getting wifi to work?

wlan0 shows up when I run “iwconfig”, but I can’t get it to connect via CLI.
Network manager acknowledges that there is a wireless connection but will not show any access points.

I installed latest version of kboot using synaptic and now wifi-radar shows access point but cannot connect :/

    Anyone get wifi working?

  36. Ottawa Canada

    thanks

    Ottawa, Canada

  37. chrisw

I’ve written a couple of times but I cannot see an answer to the question posed by Jonathan and myself. Is it possible to download and install 8.10 directly from the internet overwriting already installed 7.10?

  38. Hi there,

Installed, running fine – but slow
No matter which media player, it drops frames – awful
I’m talking about a small divx file, played via VLC

Which software shall we use / additionnal packages to make it read correctly ?
I’m not event thinking about feeding VLC with HD MKV files as a small crappy divx isn’t rendered correctly

    Did I forgot something ?

  39. mickb

I have working wifi BUT I could only get it work by connecting to an unsecured access point. To work around this, on my router I created a dedicated SSID for the PS3 and used MAC address filtering to ensure only the PS3 is allowed to connect via that SSID. It’s not a nice way of doing things but it’s worked for me.

The two issues I have are:

Cannot fix black borders, tried all 1080p video modes but the black borders are always there (connected via HDMI to Bravia W Series). From what I understand fbset can only be used to reduce the resolution if the picture is going off the screen?

Logitech Mediaboard recognised / paired but doesn’t work.

  40. Michael Rempes

In order to save yourselves a lot of time with wifi……………

From my experience of trial and error, you need to use 128 bit encrypted wep. Mine works perfect with it.

Ive also managed to get full 1080p on my 40 inch bravia.

You just need to add some code in kboot.conf,……..thats it

  41. Tom

Just a quick update on my comments, best VLC output I got was via

    Video > DeInterlace > Drop

works about as well as it did in 7.10

the remove black borders trick by SwiftBiscuit almost works, just need to use ChriW’s trick of sticking it all in the rc.local file

everything else is as was from 7.10, still a little slow but then Ubuntu recomends 384MB of RAM which isn’t available on the PS3, plus with the HyperVisor in-place, until this is hacked, we can’t really expect it to perform up to normal standard, still rather useful though for those few DivX/XviD files that aren’t detected correctly by the crossbar

  42. chris

I have been using 8.10 for the last 7 days, the os is slow at times and I am still waiting on a flash10 update for the i386. I have tried to install version 9 but am still a novice at the terminal. Apple drivers have installed correctly but would like to be able to stream flash

Anyone getting flash to work yet?

  43. shadow

WIFI….. I have no need for WIFI but I had read somewhere that because of the HyperVisor you can only use one or the other (wire or WIFI) you would need to delete the connections and make a new on and that to use WIFI you cant be using it on the GameOS. So you would need to switch your PS to wired before booting into otheros. Just a thought. Let me know how it works.

  44. Burnoq

I installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my PS3 last week.
It doesn’t seem slower than Xubuntu 7.10 and almost everything works fine.

It remains some problems with VLC, and after a week of Google I haven’t find any solution. I set the good parameters (X11 output…) but there is sometimes vertical green lines on the video : sometimes I don’t have any problem and sometimes these lines appear when I start a video. So I really don’t understand what happens.
Am I the only one who have that kind of problem with VLC ?
    Please help !

Tank you for this website and sorry for my English.

  45. The Prodejeff

    Hello everyone,

This evening I was trying to play my video´s in full screen mode and without the vertical green line, I installed the Xine player and it seems to work with dvd´s who aren´t encrypted, AVI and MP4.

It´s all pixelated and I can´t have any other app running in the background.

The DVD goes all slow but after a while it has a dissent speed with frame drop´s.

(I´m from Belgium, so that explains my rubbish writing.

  46. anyone get the wpa-psk working?

  47. About the CD-ROM issue I am installing Xubuntu for PS3 8.10 and I’ve got the issue too. I was a bit frustrated because I trying to eject the CD-ROM but it didn’t work. So I waited for a good while. The system will prompt the user to manually load the drivers from Floppy. just say NO! Then the system will take you back to a menu with a lot of choices. Then you can eject the CD-ROM and then leave it out. Then select the Check the CD-INTEGRITY from the menu, and wait again. The system will prompt you to insert the CD-Rom because it detects that there is no CD inserted. After that the System will install the CD-Rom drivers and will prompt you Check the CD for Integrity, Just say NO. We tricked the system to install the CD-ROM. If the System is asking you for a PC-CARD just say no. and continue. After all is done you just need to select the keyboard again and follow trough with the Installation. Now it is installing the network card. If one has trouble just keep playing with it, but I think that the ejection of the CD-ROM has a lot to do with the proper installation of the CD-ROM driver.
    GOOD LUCK!!!

  48. Alex

will intrepid work with wifi? (i have no password on my wifi at the moment).

  49. RICKY

i install Ubuntu 8.10 from live cd… after install the Ubuntu my mouse & keyboard are not working.. i’m stop on my Ubuntu login screen……i’m new user of Linux Ubuntu 8.10… so plz tell me clearly step by step…what i do now.. help me out…..!

  50. Mike

WiFi works! Simple… just go unencrypted, have your router hide the SSID, and enter it in after clicking the “Join hidden network” option in the drop-down menu… anyone see a problem with this?

  51. TJ

I’m using Xubuntu 8.10 right now in PS3, everything works pretty well. I’m working on getting the wifi to work, but it’s not a big deal because I’m using a wireless game adapter as a bridge, may not be as pretty but it’s as effective, besides I plan on going 802.11n anyway. I also noticed someone asking about getting videos and audio to play. I simply use vlc media player for everything, it reads nearly every codec known to man, I only have issues playing a straight DVD right now and I’m working on that. vlc can be found in the synaptic repositories, make sure to also download the esd and mozilla plugins

  52. terence

wifi works yay just click on the icon go down to connect to hidden network and type in the name of you network make sure its unprotected and connect

    thanks

having problems installing a flash player/ gnash

  54. Chris

I’ve tried every thing possible to install the flash on my PS3. I am running Ubuntu 8.10. Please, someone help. I am new to this, but learning fast.

  55. Trepach2

Looks like everyone here post only problems. With that rate this will be no help for anyone soon.

  56. ProCision

This is the longest install ever. I fell a sleep waiting for this thing to get done. And when i awoke it still wasn’t done. Went to bed got up and I am still installing. There is no way that this is a 45 min. install. It took the PS3 two and a half hours to format. I can not comment on Ubuntu yet but I will not have any complaints seeing that I am doing this just for emulation. I use TVersity for all my divx and mp4, so no need to use vlc and mplayer.

  57. Matt

Hey I’m installing Ubuntu 8.1 on my PS3 and it can’t find my wireless, even with DHCP. Any ideas? I tried putting in my ip address but it didn’t work.

  58. Gary

CAN YOU ALL STOP BITCHING IN COMPUTER LINGO LANGUAGE AND EXPLAIN WHY I CANT CONNECT TO A SIMPLE WIFI NETWORK ON XUBUNTU 8.10?????? PLEASE HELP. I HAVE AN UNSECURED WIFI NETWORK ON MY COMPUTER 5 FEET AWAY!!!! SO WHY CAN’T I CONNECT!!! THIS PISSES ME OFF

  59. ChadR

I can only get my WiFi to work by left clicking the NetworkManager in the task bar and selecting “Connect to hidden Networks” Then a window pops up that lets you input the hidden Network Information Including the Name and the Password. Once done I hit OK and I can then connect to the internet. Problem is I have to do this each time I startup my PS3 :(

  60. Matt

Gary, you are a F***ING twit, you know that? How can you expect to get wireless working without knowing “computer lingo language”? And if your Wifi network is only 5 feet away, just run a damned piece of cat5 and call it a day, idiot.

  61. LOL@MATT

Too true brother. Guy should consider himself lucky really.
