Installing Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon on your PS3

This is an outdated guide. If you're installing Ubuntu for the first time it is highly recommended that you use the 8.10 instructions instead.

Loading the installer

If you're still in XMB, restart the PS3 (by pressing [Yes] at the [Default System] > [Other OS] prompt) with the disc loaded. Otherwise, just insert the disc in the PS3, start it up, and wait for the installer to begin.

After a few lines of text, the terminal will stop and display:

This is an Ubuntu Live CDROM

If in doubt, just press Enter.

kboot: _

Pressing Enter will start the installation with the kernel loading the system. Never mind the usb error message(s), just let the installer start up.

Installing the base system

After a few minutes you will be prompted with a low resolution screen (unless your monitor resolution is automatically detected). You will have to move the screen contents around to see the whole window area. Hold down the keyboard Alt-key while you click and drag the mouse to position the window so you can see all information on each screen.

After about half an hour (at about 82%) you will get a message "Cannot access security updates" (if the screen is black just move your mouse to deactivate the screen saver). This is because you're not connected to the Internet. Just click OK, and the installer will continue.

Hit [Restart now]. The CD will automatically eject itself.

When prompted to press ENTER, you might need to turn off the PS3 manually by holding down the I/O button on your console for 10 seconds. Start it up again and press [Enter] at the kboot: prompt to start Ubuntu.

On the greeting screen enter the user name and password you chose during installation.

Congratulations! You should now have a working Ubuntu Operating System installed on your Playstation 3. Move on to Setup PSUbuntu to configure screen resolution and making it run more smoothly.
