Hi all,

My ps3 was replaced due to a "dead" drive, and so with the old system was gonne my old Gutsy install.
I wanted my new ps3 going for a recent ubuntu release again, and so I went for my own, ignoring hardy and upgrades from gutsy to hardy or else, walking through the new "on the works" Intrepid release. The result: I got my ps3 running Intrepid and my favourite desktop (Kde 4.1 - It's fast than default ubuntu desktop, I think it's the ideal for the PS3 Ubuntu) :)

I'll post some basic info about my procedure if some of you want to go for it also:

- I used kubuntu-8.04.1-alternate-powerpc+ps3 (31/07/2008) daily build for the install.

- When I was asked about what kernel to install I said "none", and then I manually installed the test kernel for PSUbuntu developers. You can get it at http://ubuntu.munckfish.net/linux-ports/

- I used Petitboot, got this one: http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/ ... .06.27.bld

- Edited My sources.list so it looks:

deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/ intrepid main universe restricted multiverse
deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/ intrepid-security universe main multiverse restricted
deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/ intrepid-updates universe main multiverse restricted
deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/ intrepid-proposed universe main multiverse restricted
deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/ intrepid-backports universe main multiverse restricted
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu intrepid main

- Finally: apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

If everything went fine when you reboot the system you'll be prompted by kdm. Have fun Kdeing!!

This is great news miguel! A bit surprising that Kubuntu is faster than normal Ubuntu, but KDE4.1 looks promising. I will try it out :)

Is wifi working?

Great news indeed. Did you have any issues while installing from kubuntu-8.04.1-alternate-powerpc+ps3?

Hi FredTech,

I'll try wifi later. I've been using wired connection till now, it seems to work ok as I've been streaming movies very fine with VLC over my home network. I think the system boots and runs faster than it was running with gutsy (gnome based) as I can remember.

jms:
I tried kubuntu-8.04.1-alternate-powerpc+ps3 also, but the main problem of installing with only about 80 mb of ram available put me in the way of Intrepid.. maybe the procedure of manually installing the kernel during the install works also for hardy.. Intrepid w/kde 4.1 is working pretty well for me.. I only have some issues with certains plasmoids so far, no big deal, will check that later.

Cheers

Great Miguel! :o
I ask You if, for who "doesn't know how", could you make a little tutorial, a step-by-step for the correct installation by 0? ;)
Thank You and sorry for my english if not so correct... :P

A guy that would have
an Ubuntu/Kubuntu on
his PS3 w/wifi and
doesn't know how to do it...
(and fears damage something )

Hi migliorare,

Don't fear anything, you'll not damage anything trying to get ubuntu running :) You have always hard reset to boot to game os and redo if anything goes wrong..

I'll write a more detailed 'from scratch' how-to/tutorial as soon as I have some free time and post it here. Probably I'll be installing a new system on a friend's ps3 on a few days so I'll try to write down every steps I made.

A correction: The image I used on my install was not kubuntu-8.04.1-alternate-powerpc+ps3 (that's Hardy) but a daily Intrepid build from 31/07/2008. It seems there's no more those builds on the ports sections at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/
I'll upload the iso I used somewhere if needed.

Cheers!

@miguel

You said "kubuntu-8.04.1-alternate-powerpc+ps3", but did you mean to say "intrepid-alternate-powerpc+ps3.iso" seeing how the title of this thread is for Intrepid??
